My Gr Granparents marriage certificate states they were married at 14 Abbotsford Place, Morton? Glasgow, would this be a registry office ? I am a little confused by this.
Thanks

Hi Tricia
Although you haven't given a date for your Gr Gr's event I very much doubt it would be a Registry Office as they are a fairly recent innovation.
Abbotsford Place has come up a few times on the board and usually it has been the address of a private dwelling. Most of that area was tenemented property i.e. several families living in flats which shared a common entry and the custom was to be married in the bride or groom's home.
Church weddings are also a comparitively recent phenomenon.
Sometimes bride and groom give the same address but that does not mean they were living together. Mostly it was a convenient way of establishing residence in a parish so that Banns did not have to be called in his and her parishes before they could get maried. (It cost a not inconsiderate sum to have your Banns called.)
Have a look at:
viewtopic.php?t=3113&highlight=abbotsford+place
This might clarify a few things.

I don't understand 'Morton' as I'm fairly sure it was (and still is) in the Gorbals but here is a photograph of what 2 - 28 Abbottsford Place looked like in 1964.trish58 wrote:My Gr Granparents marriage certificate states they were married at 14 Abbotsford Place, Morton? Could it have been the household name?
What were their usual addresses?

I had looked at the forum on the Abbosford Place address's as I remember other members saying similar to me..
The marrige took place in 14 June 1872, It reads;- Marriages in the district of "Morton"
in the Burgh of Glasgow.
After banns according to the "Tome"
of the Chuch of Scotland.
The address of both Elizabeth Agnew & Louis Rae is written as;-
20 Tenth Shamrock Street Glasgow.

Sorry about all the
marks, but this is how the certificate reads.
If anyone can shed any light on these address's I would be very grateful.
Thanks again

Hi Tricia
It would read "According to the Forms of the Church of Scotland"
We could probably help with reading the missing/difficult parts of the certificate if you posted it in the Gallery.
Instructions for this are at:
viewtopic.php?t=6496.
Once it has been approved by one of the Admin bods it will be posted so that many pairs of eyes can take a look at it. Usually we can work out what it says eventually.
I wonder if Elizabeth was at the same address in 1871 ? She might be on the census there and you would be able to solve a part of your own puzzle. Who knows - Louis mught be living there as a lodger - a not unheard of situation

Without seeing the entry I'm certain 'Tome' should read terms.
I think if you look at the Shamrock St again it will be North or South.
And after seeing all that I 've worked out the district is Tradeston not Morton!!!!!

Hi Annette,
You win the coconut (or at least half a coconut).
The handwriting is challenging for this one - it was registered in the District of Tradeston in the Burgh of Glasgow.
After banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland.
The certificate can be seen at:

All the best,
