Shepherd and Clyne, parents of Wm Shepherd b.c.1847

Post by sheilago » Mon Oct 22, 2007 3:30 pm

I have another mystery. I have found my ggg grandfather William Shepherd who married Elizabeth Croall in 1867 at Dunottar, Kincardineshire. He was born around 1847 in Guthrie,Angus. His parents were stated as William Shepherd( labourer) and Isabella Clyne. However I cannot find their marriage (despite Isabella's quite unusual name) or William Shepherd senior's death. I know he was dead by 1867 when son married. I have found the death of an Isabella Shepherd m.s. Clyne in 1900 in Arbroath, which could be her, but have no proof. It gives William's occ as Railway signalman - is this poss if he died by 1867? It doesn't tie in with occ on son's marriage record. I also cannot find William & Isabella in the Census - if son William was born in Guthrie I thought perhaps they were in Angus in 1851, but can't find a trace of them in 1851 or 1861.

Hi Sheilago,

I've found on Ancestry 1841 a William Shepherd age 4 born CO Angus, Perthshire togther with his parents William and Issabell Shepheard :!:
living in Wellington Row Coupar Angus. His Dad is a gardener.

In 1851 the same family has moved to Washington, Meigle, Perthshire - Dad still a gardener. No sign of William Jr.

Are you sure William was born in Guthrie Angus or could it have been Coupar Angus, Perthshire?

Looks like William died in Kirkden in 1863.

Search for Shephard.

:D Thankyou once again everyone for your help, especially Annette, who seems to have found them. Looks like Isabella's sister Ann Clyne is staying with them in 1841, which adds to the likelihood that this is the correct family. You are all so clever - I've obviously got a lot more to learn about searching, though I'm picking up tips all the time from this web-site.

Checked Wm's death record

Post by sheilago » Tue Oct 23, 2007 3:51 pm

Just to let Annette know that I checked the death record for 1863 and it is my Wm Shephard. He died in the line of duty (as a railway pointsman) when he was run over by an engine at Guthrie Station. He left a wife and 10 children - no compensation in those days! I will try to find out what happened to them. Thanks again, Sheila

In 1871 she has only the youngest two at home with her, and only the youngest one with her in 1881. I see a probable sighting of her on her own in 1891, and she died before the 1901 census.

All the best,

Hello Sheila,

Glad the research is going well and I see Andrew has given you another few pointers.

Just to let you know when I searched for the family in Angus at SP I used shep*rd in the surname box and hopefully that covers all variations on the name.

Annette M
