Register of Corrected Entries

Post by Kathy » Mon Nov 12, 2007 11:39 am

I have a RCE from 1903.

Samuel Gibson Craig 1848 - 1903 (Greenock, Renfrewshire)

Cause of Death:
The Jury find that on 6th March last, deceased, while employed by Scott & Co. fell against the gland of the steam pipe and was fatally injured (xxx verdict of Jury)

Cause of death on the register is Cellulilis, 17 days after the accident. Google search on Cellulilis seems to be in this case Streptococcal Infection.

My question is, if there was a jury involved, where could I find more information?

Hi Kathy,

If there was a court case, it may have been written up in the Greenock Telegraph. If you contact the James Watt Library in Greenock they will do a lookup for you.

See http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/sheriffcourt.asp for some details about the Fatal Accident Inquiry that would have taken place in the local Sheriff Court in front of a jury. Worthwhile your contacting National Archives of Scotland as you have the name, place and date to see if the papers survive.

See also the definitive info on the subject at http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ght=retour which I'm surprised hasn't been referred to in the replies so far.

Cellulitis in this case would probably have involved a severe blood infection (septicaemia), see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulitis , - in the days before antibiotics there was no effective treatment.
