Help reading a name.

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Dec 31, 2007 6:04 pm

While we are all waiting for a place on SP, would someone take a look at the death certificate for Isabella Still which I just uploaded to the gallery.

In the witness column, there is a name which I think is Johan McGregor. Under neath is something which I'm reading as ______grandchild. Can anyone make out what the word before grandchild is? I keep thinking "great", but it doesn't really look like that.

On the 1901 census, Johan McGregor is living with Isabella and her daughter Isabella, but he is listed as a boarder. As far as I know daughter Isabella never married and only had one child, a daughter named Isabella, who died in infancy. I suspect that Johan is an illegitimate member of the family, but I haven't run down his birth cert. yet. He was 8 in 1901.

Hi Carol
It does look like "_grandchild. " I would say it is "Adopted Grandchild".

Best wishes
Lesley

I read it as adopted as well, Carol.

Thanks Lesley and Frances!

Sometimes things are so obvious I just don't think of them! Now I'm wondering what his story was! Just tried to get a birth certificate out of SP again. Got to view the first of four pages, then got thrown out again! This is not a good day to try to find anything on SP! Think I'll go watch the Weather Channel for a while!
