Grahams from SKYE (Lower/Upper Breakish)

Post by Tartan Giant » Tue Jan 01, 2008 3:47 pm

Happy New Year everybody,

My first post, and I hope not asking a dumb question!

Where can I find on-line the BIRTH records of those born in SKYE please?

I'm particulary interested in my grannies lineage, Flora Graham who was born in 1879 and was the daughter of John GRAHAM (farmer). Flora moved to Glasgow and was married in 1906 to William Gilchrist Paisley DON (my grampa) who was a gardiner.

My visits many years ago to the "White Heather Hotel" pointed to the area of Lower Breakish and Upper Breakish as links to where my relatives lived.

Any help would much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Tartan Giant,

Welcome to TalkingScot [scotland-flag]

The birth, marriage and death records for Scotland can be found at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (link at the top of this webpage) on a pay per view basis. If you are certain that you are looking only in the area around Breakish, then that is within Strath Registration District, Inverness-shire.

For pre-1855 (beginning of statutory registration in Scotland), the Old Parochial Registers (OPRs) for Strath Parish only cover 1815-1854 (births) and 1823-1854 (marriages) and no deaths. Also for that period, the records are likely to be dominantly (completely?) Church of Scotland. If your people were Free Church or Roman Catholic, you may struggle to find records of them.

Be aware that as a new year of data has just gone online at ScotlandsPeople the site is busy and running slower than normal.

All the best,

AndrewP

Happy New Year and welcome to Talking Scot TG. :D

You can find official BMD's online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I'm having difficulty searching for Flora's birth at the moment but could this be her in 1881?

Th three eldest children of the family found by Annette show up on the online IGI. The younger ones will be after the end of the 1874 cut-off date on that source.

Children of John Graham(e) and Ann MacInnes.
FARQUHAR GRAHAM - Birth: 15 NOV 1866 Strath, Inverness, Scotland
DONALD GRAHAM - Birth: 02 JUN 1868 Strath, Inverness, Scotland
CHIRSTY GRAHAM - Birth: 22 FEB 1870 Strath, Inverness, Scotland
MARY GRAHAME - Birth: 23 FEB 1872 Strath, Inverness, Scotland

All the best,

Later.......................................

I found a Flora Gra*me born Strath, Inverness at SP but it was registered in 1875. :?

A check for Marion shows that she was registered in 1877. So I think the above is your Flora.

regards,
Annette M

It's strange Marion and Flora's ages are out on the census. Maybe just mistranscribed.

Yes, but was she really 99, or did her son-in-law just think she looked like she was 99?
