help finding a marriage(thankyou Jack)

Post by kirsty1st » Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:16 pm

i'm hoping someone might have more luck finding my grandparents marriage certificate.

my grandfather was roderick montgomery stewart
my grandmother patricia gertrude carrington

roderick was born in glasgow 1924 and i'm not sure about patricia but i know she was born about 1930 as i found her death certificate.

they both died in glasgow, but my father was born in sunderland 1951 he has an older sister and 3 younger siblings. again i'm not sure weather they were born scotland or england?

unfortunatly none of them wish to help me so i'm struggling.

i'm waiting for my grandfathers birth certificate so hopefully it will come up with some useful things.

so basically i'm not sure if they where married in england or scotland of which i have searched both but have found nothing.

any help gratefully appreciated as i'm stumped.

Hi kirsty

The modern indexes on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk have only just recently been released. These so far only consist of births and deaths up to 2006. Modern Marriages are in the works and hopefully will follow soon. I'm guessing from the birth year you state for your dad that his parents would have married long after 1932 which is the cut off year for searching and viewing the existing marriage database and images you find online. When the marriage index is continued to 2006 I'm betting you'll be able to find your grandparents marriage record then. (If of course they married in Scotland!) You will have to purchase the extract of it in order to view all the details. Other than confirming the date of the event you'll get the same data (ie parents names and occupations) from each grandparent's birth record or death record. With this information you'll be able to work your way back in time and develop your family tree.

Best wishes
Jean

Kirsty
If any of the children were born in Scotland, their birth cert would have the marriage date (but only sometimes the place) of the parents on it. This could help in your search in England. I know its a big IF. But on Scotlands People I think you can enter their name, and the mother's maiden name, which would cut way down on the Stewarts... Just a thought.

the birth of there children where between 1945-1965 approx.

does anyone know apart from ancestry any websites i could search english marriages from 1940-1950.

thanks again
