Suggestions - Tosh

Post by Heather » Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:41 am

I'm looking for a fresh approach in finding a death

One, Daniel Tosh - this is what is known :

1. Born c1821 Donachole, Ireland
2. Married c1846 Donachole, Ireland to Elizabeth Nixon
3. Census 1851 and Census 1861 he is living with his wife and children in Dundonald, Ayrshire
4. Census 1871 he is living with his wife and children in Hutchesontown, Larnark
5. Death, 1875 Elizabeth Tosh, wife of Daniel Tosh dies in Glasgow. Daniel is the informant of his death.

Looking for the death of Daniel Tosh. I've tried as many possibilities as I can think of including the possibility that he may have left Scotland (one of his older daughters married in Canada in 1876 ) and have searched further census' and also Death Records on Scotland's People.

No luck.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi Heather,
Have you found his children in 1881, or have they all disappeared also?
Regards,
Sarah

Sarah,

The the last of their children that I believe was still living was born in 1864, and think I've got him in a boy's reformatory in 1881.

But - "thank you" for the thought. I don't have the census for each of the other children so I'll try to locate those first and see if by chance he is living with them and perhaps his name is not spelled correctly.

Thanks again for your help :D

Hi

I have Mary(May) Tosh whose father was Daniel and Mother Mary Smith from Lanark,Scotland, she came to NZ not sure when and married Edward Wiggins in Palmerston North, North Island New Zealand in 1903.

Mary's parents were married 18 july 1873 in Stonehouse Lanark, Scotland.

Think there is connection, have been trying to find out if all the family came to NZ or just Mary(may).

Hope we can help one another

Kind Regards
Sue

Hi Sue,

I am sorry about the delayed reponse here on this end.

Do believe we have a connection, I am related to a sister of Mary's father ~ Daniel Tosh.
Daniel Tosh was the son of Daniel Tosh and Elizabeth Nixon, both of Donaghadee, Ireland.

Can I PM you with some details ?

Cheers :D

Hi Heather

Nothing at all that I can see in the Scottish records for a Daniel or even a plain D TOSH b. 1821 +/- 10 years using all the surname variant search possibilities now available on the ScotlandsPeople website.

Which would all tend to imply that, after the death of his wife, he either moved back to Ireland, or moved to stay with one of his kids who had left Scotland.

Either possibility was quite common. I've even come across a 75 year old moving to NZ to join a son.

mb

Thank you very much for taking a look using the surname variant search, had not tried that yet.

I don't have a firm line on everyone of his children (yet) so, as you say he may possibly turn up
with one of them, or have returned to Ireland.

Once again, thank you.

My pleasure !

The shorter a surname is the more problematic it is in terms of possible spellings variants, as wildcards can end up producing a very high number of possibilities; so that I'm now on the lookout for examples where I can 'test drive' the magnificent range, 7 in total, of systems on ScotlandsPeople, that aim to cover possible spelling variations, in particular as regards short surnames.
