Missing Child !!

Post by David Lang » Wed Mar 05, 2008 5:17 pm

Hi All

Got a bit of a mystery here and wonder if anyone could see if they could shed some light on it.

In the 1871 Census , i have Alexander Lang in Campbeltown with his wife and 3 children, also there is a Grandson named Alexander aged 7 Years.

Now the Grandson is the problem , he was born in 1862 as Alexander Pollock , illegitimate son of Janet Pollock , and according to the RCE attached Donald Loynachan ( anglicised to Lang).

Now Donald is not in the household in 1871 as he has emigrated to Australia in 1866.

In the 1881 there is no sign of young Alexander on the census with his grand father. or I cant seem to find him on the census anywhere.

Young Alexander was born in Campbeltown, I have checked the Victorian Archives for passengers to there but cannot seem to find anyone who matches.

Can anyone help
Thanks
David

Hi David,
I couldn't find him in 1891, so that perhaps gives you a time frame for his emigration.
All the best,
Sarah

Seem to be doing a few updates today!!

I think i have found Alexander marrying a Isabella Ewing in 1886 in Campbeltown and emigrating the same year to Sarnia, Ontario. Whre according to the canadien census' he stays to at least 1911 and has numerous children.

Just need to get his canadien DC to confirm the details

The Alexander Lang who married Isabella Ewing is definitely the one at Sarnia in 1911 confirmed by the births of his children indexed at http://www.familysearch.org .The only problem is he gives his year of birth as 1866 although the month is the same.
In 1901 he gives his dob as 26th May 1865.

What does it say about the parents of Alexander on the marriage entry to Isabella Ewing?

Annette

Hi David,

I've sent you a PM about a completely unrelated topic.

Could you check and see if it's arrived please? I don't know what's going on with my 'account' - I keep having to log-in every time I visit even although I click to 'stay'.

Probably something I'm doing wrong!!

Hi Anne

The "logging on" and staying "logged on" is a glitch in the system at the moment.

Hopefully this will be recitified shortly.

Jean

Hi Annette

Marriage certificate confirms Alexander Parents as Daniel Lang and Janet Pollock no marriage date for them. I was 95% sure the family in Sarnia was Alexander's.

It looks like he liked to vary his age on the census , but as we all know that not uncommon!!

Hi David:

Also to be considered with ages stated in census records, are the instructions to the census takers where they were instructed to round-up/down the age to the closest full year or the closest 5 year mark.

It was not uncommon for people not to know exactly what their age was due to lack of numeracy and literacy skills.
