Why would someone lie about their/their parent's maiden name on certificates?
I have one Rachel Steven who, on her marriage certificate, gives her parents names as John Steven and Janet Trueman. Yet in other certificates, the mother is listed as a Mckay.
Rachel's birth: mother is Janet Steven, Ms McKay
Rachel's marriage: Jessie Steven, Ms Truman
Rachel's death: Janet Steven, Ms Mckay
Trueman is consistent through the family, though; it is carried in a couple of children through middle names (including Rachel and her sister Euphemia) McKay is nowhere to be found, so far.
As for Janet's parents: well, I've a birth certificate which seems to match that has a Thomas Trueman and a Janet Potter, but on Janet's death certificate, it's Thomas Trueman (canal lockkeeper) and ____ Trueman, Ms Drummond to complicate things even further! (The mother's name is actually left blank in the cert)
Perhaps the clue is in her sister Euphemia's marriage certificate, where I *think* I can make out 'formerly' under her mother's name. Suggesting she was married before? But why doesn't it say 'formerly' in the other certificates, instead of 'Ms' or 'maiden name'?! The certificate is very hard to read, however. Perhaps someone here can have a look if I upload it to the gallery?

Al lin all, a bit of a mystery, and I'd be grateful if anyone can share their thoughts! Sorry if it's a confusing post!

Hi Mi,
I am not sure what to make of the former name. It would be worth filling in a contact form on the ScotlandsPeople website and telling them that parts of this certificate are difficult to read. Normally they will send you a fresh scan from the register book which is a lot easier on the eye.
All the best,
AndrewP

Could it be Amos?
I saw a couple of Amos children with her in 1861 and then found this family in 1851.
Name: Janet Amos
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1820
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Hillend, Fifeshire
Parish Number: 622
Civil Parish: Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 12 Catherine Street
Occupation: Laundress
Household Members: Name Age
Helen Amos 8
Janet Amos 31
Jessie Amos 12
Thomas Amos 5
Alexander Dykes 23
Charles Mathison 23
Robert Steven 6 Mo
Althought the relationships and places of birth are quite different between the 2 census records I'm sure they have to be the same family.
Regards,
Annette
I see she called herself Trueman when she married John in 1852.
I thought maybe they were 2 different Janets but then I saw this marriage-
JANET TRUEMAN Pedigree
Female
Parents:
Father: THOMAS TRUEMAN
Marriages:
Spouse: ROBERT AMOS
Marriage: 16 DEC 1836 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Sort that lot out!

I've filled out a contact form so hopefully I'll get a better scan...
Okay, now things are starting to get confusing!
I think it may make sense, though (about the Amos family). Possibly. In the 1871 census I found Rachel, Euphemia and Janet living with a Strang family.
Strang was listed as son-in-law registrant in her death certificate, I think, and his wife is Janet so I presumed this was her daughter's married family.
Yet that would put this Janet (jr) born in 1839, before Janet (sr) married John, which confused me. If was born in a previous marriage, however, this might fit.
Still confused as to where the Mckay came from, though!
Thanks for your contributions! It's a puzzler, alright.

To confuse things further, the 1841 census which I believe is her (listed as Jennet Trueman with Robert Amos and two children), lists her birth as in England!
But thanks for pointing to the Amos family - I've just rechecked the 1871 Census and Janet's own birthplace is listed as Hillend, Fifeshire whilst her elder daughter Janet is listed as born in St Cuthberts: which completely matches up with the Amos lot.
No idea about Mckay, still, possibly she never divorced Amos/he never died and she was trying to hide this? I guess the next thing I need to find is the Amos marriage and if he died.

Seems highly likely that this is Janet's family in 1841.
Thomas Trueman
Age: 45
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796
Gender: Male
Where born: England
Civil Parish: Falkirk
County: Stirlingshire
Address: Union Canal Lock 11
Occupation: Labourer
Parish Number: 479
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Dougald McCullah 50
Niel McCullah 15
William Nairn 25
David Robson 40
Euphemia Trueman 15
Janet Trueman 40
Margret Trueman 10
Rachael Trueman 13
Thomas Trueman 45
Janet and Thomas were still alive in 1861 so it should be easy to find their death entries on SP.
