Have i the right John?

Post by crayspond » Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:16 pm

Hi.
I am going back through my records and would like someone to have a look at the following three entries for births of John Beveridge

John married to Margaret Dale or Deal (haven't been able to find marriage cert). He was born 04/01/1726 she was born c 1730.

1 25/02/1750 BEVERIDGE JOHN JOHN BEVERIDGE/MARGARET DEAL FR1439 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0050 0092
2 29/05/1763 BEVERIDGE JOHN JOHN BEVERIDGE/MARGARET DALE FR1740 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0060 0230
3 27/01/1765 BEVERIDGE JOHN JOHN BEVERIDGE/MARGARET DALE FR1764 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0060 0278

I know about the rest of the children they had (Andrew,Barbara,Jean and George) but as my John Beveridge is the last one (27/01/1765) it makes it a gap of 15 years.
My question is can i assume the first two John's died as if not i could be tracking the wrong John.!!!

Thanks,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

Although unproven, it is most likely that John #1 died, the next son born was named John. When John #2 died, it is most probable that the next son born was named John.

It is all a theory, but I would say it is a theory that stands a good chance of being the correct sequence of events.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Ailsa,
The births of all three Johns is confirmed with ScotlandsPeople. The usual thing is that when one child dies and the parents wish to keep the name, they give it to the next boy or girl. I have encountered at least one case similar to yours.

Thanks for that - i did think that was the case, but lurking in the back of my mind was some doubt that all my research was on the wrong John. You have assured me somewhat.
