Hi Conniejane
And welcome to Talking Scot.
Prior to 1875, the IGI is a good source of free info, also worth trying http://www.sctbdm.com/
Other than that, you would need to go to Scotlands People, a pay per view site (link at top of page) where you can download copies of the original BMD entries for a small fee (e.g. a marriage will cost a total of £1.20 to see the results of a search and download a copy of the original entry, giving full details of bride and groom etc)
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Conniejane,
Welcome! If I have the correct family (parents Alexander and Janet) the family are easily found in the censuses in Edinburgh.
Mary and Rachel are still living at home in 1901, ages 37 and 36. Do you know that they did marry?
Assuming James kept up a more or less consistent occupation from 1891 to 1901 (Apprentice Tailor > Clothiers Assistant) he appears to have married a Margaret in 1900 and is living in Leith in the 1901 census.
You can find out who Margaret is by downloading the marriage certificate. There are two James Elder & Margaret marriages in Edinburgh City between 1891 and 1901. Both in 1900 in St Giles... which leads me to believe the two records are the same marriage. But I may be wrong.
Let us know how you make out!
Regards,
Sarah

Here's the family in 1881 ........

From the available death records on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk it looks like Rachel and Mary died unmarried !
James' marriage ain't that difficult to find if you limit the search in terms of area and likely age at marriage on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , ditto his death register entry, the informant being a son, and his wife then a widow ......., and James' death register entry is also straightforward to locate ..............
I'm assuming that Conniejane is descended from Elizabeth, Alexander or Janet ?!, as there's nae mair wains showing up in the 1891 census .....
Given that the informant for the death register entry for James' wife was a son, there has to be a guid chance of living relatives in Scotland.
Never mind possible descendants of whoever is not Conniejane's ancestor, i.e. perm two from the three, - Elizabeth, Alexander and Janet !

PS Conniejane, Send me a PM if you want more info .............

Indeed, variant spellings being the reason !SarahND wrote:.....snipped.........You can find out who Margaret is by downloading the marriage certificate. sorry about asking people to look up my elder 'doings' for me. i have only just got onto scotlands people, after a run of difficulties, and i had absolutely no idea that you had to use credits that you have paid for, to access information.
I do apologise to evryone for asking. I thought that it was a free site and i wouldn't have dreamed of being so cheeky if i had known it wasn't.
A very big thank you to everyone who did send me info. i truly appreciate it. thanks again. jane
