I have been looking for a birth of a George Seeley in 1885, I think he should have be illegitimate. Mother being Catherine Seeley nee Yule , she was registered as Catherine Mann (Illegitimate).
I have now found a birth for a George Yule Seeley registered Glasgow in 1909, so can't yet see the cert !
But my question is : George Seeley was married in 1909 , if he had not been registered at time of birth , would he have to have been registered at time of marriage?
Hope this makes sense, thanks for your help and only 7 months to wait to see the cert.

Hi Sheila,
I would expect that George should have been registered in his birth year, but using what surname? If I was putting money on it, I would say that George of 1909 is the product of the 1909 married couple.
The 1909 birth certificate will be available online in a year and 7 months, not 7 months. You need to wait until the year has ended then the 100 year old certificates are made available online.
As Anne points out, the 100 year closure does not apply in New Register House (Edinburgh) or Park Circus (Glasgow).
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: illegitimate birth
Park Circus is definitely your best bet but have you looked at the George Yuill born in 1886?sty wrote:I have been looking for a birth of a George Seeley in 1885, I think he should have be illegitimate. Mother being Catherine Seeley nee Yule , she was registered as Catherine Mann (Illegitimate).

Hi Annette
Thanks Yes I have looked at George Yuill born 1886 and all the others born within a 5 year period.
I don't think the George Yule Seeley registered in 1909 can be his child, my Aunt who is 90 can tell me all about Uncle George. He fought in WW1 for the HLI and I have a picture of him in his kilt. I have looked at deaths of George Seeley's and the only death I could find was George Born 1885.
So I hope his birth was registered late ?
Can you tell me what info I should take to Park Circus
Sheila

Hello Sheila,
If you search the WW1 Medal Card index for George Seeley there are 9 results the only obviously Scottish one being Seeley, George Y., Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 302605 Private, Seaforth Highlanders 260195 Private.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... medals.asp
If you search for George or G Se* and Highland Light Infantry the closest appears to be Seaby, George P. (There were a couple of George Yule’s in the HLI. One was killed 1918 age 39.)
Does the uniform of the soldier in the photograph match that of any of the three Regiments mentioned above?
I couldn’t see anything obvious in the WW1 Records on Ancestry
Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi Sheila
Well George’s birth is proving very hard to find. But I am almost certain that you will find the 1909 birth of George Yule Seeley to be his son. Some of the following may help – some of this you may already have.
On Ancestry – census 1891 – at 39 Smith Street, Glasgow Govan there is 6 year old George Selley with Catherine 27, James 40, Alfred 3, & James 1.
On Ancestry – census 1901 – at 41 Blackburn Street, Glasgow Govan there is 16 year old George Selly with Catherine 36 & Ivy 8.
From SP - Catherine Yule married James Selley in 1889, she is a spinster, he is a widower. His parents are John Selley & Mary m.s. Denmar. Her parents are shown as James Yule & Ann m.s. Mann.
James Selley’s first wife was Mary Weston who he married in 1880 in Renfrew and she appears to have died in 1881, so that rules out the possibility she was George’s mother.
From SP - George Seely marries Jeannie Johnstone Moodie in Glasgow in 1906 and his second wife Jeannie Steel Hutton in 1922, also Glasgow.
From SP - George Yule Seeley’s death in Glasgow in 1941 is registered by Phyllis McNeill, daughter.
On SP there is a birth of a Phyllis H Munda Seeley in Pollokshields in 1914.
Also in Pollokshields born 1921 is an Ivy Ann Denmar Seeley, (George had a half-sister Ivy – see census 1901, and Denmar was m.s. of James Selley’s mother)
There is also a birth of Catherine W Moo Seeley in Glasgow in 1907, in the same district as George Yule Seeley born 1909.
There may be other possible siblings – but these are the obvious ones which jump out given the combination of names.
Catherine Yuill aged 17 can be found with her mother Ann 61 and brother Grant 21 at 152 Park Street, Glasgow Govan in the 1881 census on Ancestry.
Catherine Mann appears on IGI as being born to Ann Mann in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1863, Ann was widowed in 1858 when her husband James Yule died in Sutherland. They had married in 1845 in Ross & Cromarty and had several children – the last being Grant born in January 1859. So obviously James Yule was not Catherine’s father although she used his name as her father.
There does not appear to be any obvious births registered for George & Alfred using any of the various spellings of Seeley or Yule – or even Mann. Perhaps they were registered under the names of their birth fathers – whatever that may have been. Sorry haven’t been able to solve your problem yet but perhaps some of the other info might just help open up some more leads.
Susan.

Don't worry about Moo as a middle name.
