REGIMENTS.ORG
Anyone bemoaning the apparent demise of Regiments.org may be interested to know that the site documentation can be downloaded to your computer. That is the whole website, thousands of web pages compacted into one file.
There’s information about it here. http://www.victorianwars.com/forum/view ... f=25&t=209
The site they have linked to is MediaFire a File Hosting site at http://www.mediafire.com/?213ycdmywzx
The downloaded file is a 27.9MB Windows Help File of the .chm variety known as regiments.chm. It will open by double clicking in Windows. Everything seems to work normally except that links to external sites may be looking for a file on your computer rather than one on the internet. Right clicking the link and selecting properties should give you enough clues as to the WWW address of that link.
As far as I know a .chm won’t work on a Mac or on Linux unless you download additional software from somewhere. There’s mention of Mac software in the thread.
I have scanned the file for virus’s and the like and I haven’t experienced any problems with the file nor have I seen any reported but like with anything downloaded from the internet you should take the normal precautions and do so at your own risk.

Hi Alan
Have had a wee look at the links and managed to fritter away a large chunk of time. Thanks for the link.

Hi Alan,
I've downloaded this but it won't work. On looking for more info on CHM files through Google, a Wikipedia article states that CHM files behave poorly in IE7, which is what I have.
I think this is known as the 'law of the sod'...!

Hello Chris,
I’m using Mozilla Firefox and I tried it in IE6 but didn’t think of possible IE7 problems. There are various programs for converting CHM to HTML like maybe this one, but I haven’t used it. http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/chm-en ... coder.html
Or you could install Firefox and use it to open the CHM but maybe the portable version of Firefox installed on a spare USB stick (it may fit on a 64MB) is an option. You could keep IE as your default browser and just plug in the stick, open Firefox, and open the CHM from the file menu. Portable applications are handy, there’s even a game of Poker! – see the Internet section of this page http://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app
Hope something works,
Alan
