Thank you Annette. Yes I think it is my grandfather, I am new to this and I must have not been doing something wrong because I got nothing and wasted all my credit, now I will get the certificates next month when I have got money for credit. But thank you for the info

I think that in 1881 your great grandfather Robert Sutherland (born 23 June 1868) may have been in Oakbank School in Aberdeen. In the census it is noted as a school for boys. Until its very recent closure it was latterly a residential school, mostly for children who had offended but also for children in other difficulties but it was probably different then.

Nope. Scrub that altogether and never rely on Ancestry! In 1881 your ggf is in Wilton in Roxburghshire with his father Robert a wool spinner, mother Margaret and various brothers and sisters.

George does show up on ScotlandsPeople, for an 1870 birth in Old Machar, even if he escaped indexing on the IGI. The IGI births stop at the end of 1874, so the younger members of this family won't be found there.

Hi again

Your Robert turns up in the 1851 census in Aberdeen with his family and again in 1861 with Mum and no Dad. The thing to watch there is that his father is indexed in 1851 under a shortened version of his name. Don't expect Robert's Mum and Dad to have been born in Aberdeen.

The best thing of all is that Robert's mother lives till after 1855 though his father is a bit more of an enigma.
