Where do I go from here?

Post by heidinabucket » Tue Aug 26, 2008 10:46 am

Hi all.
(my first post here!)
Was recently in Glasgow for a two week holiday and on my last day I went up to Parkcircus to look for a little info about my Grandfathers.
Was totally stunned to learn my great grandfather (Malcolm Johnstone Carlile)had been married in the parish of Willowfield,County Down,Ireland in 1888.
I had assumed I was Scottish protestant(religious affiliation has no relevance to me)far back in to the mists of time.
I then found out from an Aunt that my great grandmother (Mary Louisa Corlett)had in fact been French!!!!!
The church of Willowfield is still standing and I have emailed the priest there(he doesnt seem to be answering though)about the church records but was wondering if anyone here could give me some pointers as where to look for further info about my Irish and French ancestors?
(How the hell did they meet????)

Cheers.

Edd

Hi Edd,

According to 1901 & 1891 census records Mary was born at Edinburgh.

This looks like her in 1881.

Hi Edd & Annette
As far as I recall from trying to help someone out with this area before, the only place where Isle of Man records can be seen is...the Isle of Man.

Good excuse for another wee holiday!

Best wishes

The Isle of Man census records are, however, on Ancestry.com. Matilda is there in 1841 and 1851, then is in Scotland by 1871. I can't locate any of the family in 1861. I'm wondering if the wording of the birth record meant that Arthur and Matilda weren't married at that point. The 1871 census calls her a "house keeper" although her name comes in the order one would expect if she were the wife. :-k Hmmm.

All the best,
Sarah

Later: Sadly, there is a Matilda Collet, other surname Watterson, born in 1837, who died in 1871 in Edinburgh City. It might be worthwhile to spend a a bit and have a look at the image on Scotland's People.

I have to say a really BIG thank you to everyone here who have helped me tremendously.
What I dont get though is the fact that my great grandfather (Edward Johnstone Carlile) was married in the parish of Willowfield, county down,Ireland to a Mary Louisa Corlett. I have this information written in to my granfather's birth register (found at Park Circus in Glasgow)under the heading of info about father and wife name, maiden name, occupation (he was a "carter") and location of the marriage. Yet none of the information here is in line with any of that!
Why would a Scottish girl (if the Scottish census info is correct) go to Ireland to be married?

I have doublechecked(triple!) my grandfathers birth certificate and it does indeed say his father(malcolm johnstone Carlile) was married in Willowfield parish County Down Ireland to Mary Louisa Corlett, this was the 26th of Feb 1888.
This all doesnt hang together at all.
(or I am so new to ancestry research I have NO idea how things become confused and convuluted over time)
I am getting mightily confused at this point! :)

Hi Edd,

There are 3 children on the IGI born to Arthur and Matilda.

Results for: Father: Arthur Collet, Mother: Matilda
Exact Spelling: Off

International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 3

1. HARRIET ISABELLA COLLETT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 08 APR 1867 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

2. MARY LOUISA COLLETT OR WATERSTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 29 SEP 1865 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

3. ARTHUR LAWRENCE COLLETT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 19 AUG 1868 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

A free search at Emerald Ancestors shows Mary Louisa's marriage.
It also shows her sister Harriet's marriage in 1887.

There is another Mary Collett marriage in 1867, could this be Arthur's sister?
Mary's dad, Arthur died in 1885, so perhaps Mary went to Ireland to be with her sister. Or with her sister to be with her aunt.

Regards,
Annette

In my first post here I wrote my great great grandmothers name as "Mary Louisa CORLETT" as it appears in her clear handwriting on my grandfathers birth certificate.....people have come back here in response with the name Mary Louisa Collett.......are we going down the wrong path here?
Me getting pretty mixed up. :)
:(

Thank you all again for kindness and help!

Edd,
spellings of names were, in the past, a pretty fluid thing depending on who heard it, who wrote it, then limited only by imagination and handwritting when reread!

So Corlett and Collet are very probably the same thing, it helps to keep an open mind about these things.
