death "not certified".....

Post by LesleyB » Thu Jul 14, 2005 10:11 am

I have a death entry for a John McGregor, a basket maker, who was married to Mary Dick and who died on 23 May 1871 in the Parish of Ballingry, Fife (ref 408/00 0009). His parents' names are given as Peter McGregor, a Brush Maker and Anne McGregor m.s. McDougall.

However under column 6, cause of death etc. it states "Not Certified". No cause is given, and no Drs. signature. I haven't seen this before and can only guess that he either just passed away in his sleep or was perhaps found dead somewhere with no witnesses as to how he died. However as he was only 35 when he died it was not old age that did for him! I find myself puzzling over this one as there is nothing else on the record which is unusual. Has anyone seen this before?

(the informant was John Dick brother-in-law, not present, column 8 signed as usual by the registrar)

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley

Unusual, yes, but not unknown.

It was possibly the situation that the registrar was aware of the facts in this case.

Hello Davie
Thanks for your reply. In that case, is it likely there be any record at all of the cause of death? Just curious.

Best wishes

Apart from the possiblity of a note in the local paper, probably not.
