Marriage Record

Post by crayspond » Sun Nov 23, 2008 10:50 am

Hi,

Can anyone help me. I have a James McFarlane born c 1846 (scottish born) and Jane Dickson (irish born ) living in Ireland between 1873 and 1881 - they had 5 of their children there.
I cannot find any marriage for them in SP and i tried on emeraldancestors.com I also contacted familyulster.com and they have no records for them from 1864 - 1880.
Last resort i thought they may have married in England. Has anyone any access to the English records at the moment.
I have posted on the England site as i am not sure where i should post it.
Regards,

Ailsa

Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Just incase you did not know, you can access English birth marriage and death indexes for free on the freebmd site.

Tracey,

The only child born in Scotland is Jane McFarlane in Whiteinch, Renfrewshire, if census is correct she was 8 in 1891 so birth c.1883. I have been unable to find her birth in SP.

Lesley,
I had a go on the freeBMD it brings up a few possibilities for James but does not include the spouses name - or maybe i am doing something wrong.

This is a mystery which is bugging me !!

Hi Ailsa

On free BMD you can search using the spouses name on the search page, OR you can see the other names listed on the same page: there are normally two marriages per page, so a choice of two brides.

Just as an example, take this James McFarlane:
  • Marriages Jun 1871
    -------------------
    McFarlane James Liverpool 8b 245
If you click on the 245 - the page number, then you will see
  • Marriages Jun 1871
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Barrett Catherine Liverpool 8b 245
    Conway James Liverpool 8b 245
    McFarlane James Liverpool 8b 245
    O'CONNOR Margaret Liverpool 8b 245
So, this James either married Margaret O'Conor OR Catherine Barrett. From what I've seen, it seems that Free BMD gives you no less or no more information than any other index of English BMDs. As far as I'm aware, the Ancestry BMD listings use freeBMD as a source.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley,

Please excuse my ignorance - i got there in the end thanks to your instructions.
A very good site and i have bookmarked it for future ref. No matches came up for James McFarlane of Jane Dickson. Thanks for the tips though.

Tracey,
They were living in 1 Stanley Terrace, Clydebank. Old Kilpatrick in 1891. I have the 1901 census also. I will have to go back to the drawing board!

Good to hear you've been off exploring free BMD - it really is a very useful and efficient site for chasing up those south of the border. Just be sure to check the status of the year(s) you are searching for, as the indices are not complete.

To do this: on the freebmd homepage, (www.freebmd.org.uk) click the Information button, then under Statistics click on Coverage Charts and from there you can see the current coverage for births, marriages and deaths.
No matches came up for James McFarlane of Jane Dickson
I wasn't seeing anything obvious either....

Best wishes

Hi Ailsa
A wee play about on SP and there is a marriage for a couple with similar names, but much earlier than would be expected...
a James McFarlane married a Jane Dixon in 1855 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

Of course, it may be nothing to do with your couple at all, and the marriage seems a bit too early if they are then having children between 1873 - 1881. What ages do they give on the census entries you have seen? Where are they in 1881?

Best wishes

Hi Lesley,

I have also noticed this couple but as he is on the 1851 census age 5 i have discounted them as the dates are way out.

The only child born in Scotland is Jane McFarlane in Whiteinch, Renfrewshire, if census is correct she was 8 in 1891 so birth c.1883. I have been unable to find her birth in SP.

It seems that there is no marriage in Scotland as i have tried every permutation i can think of and SP is pretty good. That leaves Ireland, it is possible that there are no records or that they left Scotland early on married elsewhere settled in Ireland and had 5 kids there before going back to Glasgow round about 1882/3 to have the last child and settled there.

The search continues!
