help please

Post by nelmit » Wed Dec 17, 2008 6:35 pm

I've uploaded a couple of death certs.

I read Margaret Wilson's mother's name as Boughlie :?. Can't find anything about that spelling of surname at all.

Her husband Robert Wilson's parents are given as Robert Wilson & Jane Finlayson and I can't find a marriage for them.

Any help appreciated.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
I think it is Doughtie. Note in "Carter" above, that he doesn't cross his T's and his capital D is a bit bizarre (see "District" in the "When and Where Died" column.) At least Doughtie has the advantage of being a real name!

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Annette,

Using Sarah's answer above, there is a potential younger brother to Margaret listed on the online IGI.

JAMES MILLER - Christening: 01 FEB 1819 Saint Ninians, Stirlingshire

All the best,

Thanks Sarah (well deciphered I couldn't see pat Boughlie) & Andrew - at least it gives me something more concrete to work with. :D

Best wishes,
Annette

Well done Sarah, Doughtie it is! :D

Now the next quest is to find her in 1851 - she died at Stirling in 1860.

IGI shows she was born at Torryburn, Fife in 1778 although her age is given as 75 when she died.

Kind regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Glad it turned out to be the right name! :D

But what is her mother's maiden surname? Pretty difficult certificate you have there...

Cheers,
Sarah

Her mother's name is Balfron I'm glad to say as my starting point was Margaret Balfron Miller who was married to Robert Wilson.

The cert is horrible I know!!!

Hi again,

There is a very sparsely transcribed 1851 census that might be her (no birthplace for Mary, no surnames for 3 of her children, a son named Rose, a daughter named Daniel, etc.) You will know if these children make any sense.

1851
Shore Road, Stirling, Stirlingshire
Mary Miller, 65, Head, Domestic Duties
Rose, 37, Son, born Stirling, Stirlingshire, Seamen
James, 35, Son, born Stirling, Stirlingshire, Fimeburner
Daniel, 25, Daughter, born St Mary, Stirlingshire, Domestic Duties
Agnes Adleinerter, 22, Servant, born ??, Clackmanan, House Servant
