Irish Marriage cert

Post by crayspond » Thu Jan 08, 2009 9:59 am

Hello All,

My Gt Gt Grandparents James McFarlane and Jane Dickson married in Belfast in 21/11/1871 (This info was on their child's birth cert).(all other children were born in Ireland).

I asked familyulster.com to look for the cert and received the following

Thank you for your email and request. We have searched the indexes for marriage from 1864 - 1880 and found no reference to this marriage

I asked why this would be but have had no reply. Should i look elsewhere?

Ailsa

Regards,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa
Have you tried a search on the new LDS pilot site which has the Irish civil indexes? Word of warning though...there are some events which I know occurred, mostly marriages, and I'm not finding them, though I'm not sure why. Perhaps because it is a new feature and there are a few blips to be ironed out.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

Another way to tackle it is to order the relevant microfilms from your local LDS family history centre and work your way through the indexed years yourself. (cost is £2.70 per ordered film, so very reasonable) At least that way you know you are seeing what was actually recorded in the index..I'm working my way through some of these just now, but a later period than you are interested in.

Is there perhaps a possibility that they have given the year or location wrongly, although as the indexes are ordered by name, a search should still have found them, if there. Also it is not unknown for couple to say that had married when they had not... so that is maybe an aspect to consider too.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for the info - i just find the irish records too inconsistent - some sites say they have certain records for certain years but when you ask for them (in my case) they come back to say they can't find them.
On another subject, can you, or any one else reading this, have a look at the death cert i have on the gallery of Dugald McFarlane and try and decipher what his father's (also Dugald) occupation was.
Also after the cause of death - suicide by drowning it says something under it i can not understand.
The burial place is Southern Necropolis (far enough away from Partick) - is there any info on the MI for this place do you know?

Thanks for reading this,

There is this site:

but I couldn't see a McFarlane a first glance though.

Hi Wilma
Not all those buried there are listed, as I have a family there, none of whom are listed, not sure why.

Best wishes

Hi Ailsa
Father's occuption looks like "Wool Carder"
After the cause of death it says "no medical attendant"-----
"Certified by William Pritchard M.D. who saw Deceased October 15th"

Best wishes

Hi,
WilmaM, thanks for the link - i didn't see him either, although maybe there is no headstone or suicides were at another part of the cemetery. Thanks for looking.
Lesley,
Thanks for that it does look like 'no medical attendant' - i also had another family member supposed to be in the Necropolis - a Margaret Beveridge - i can't see her either.

On on,

Ailsa

I think the Southern Necropolis is an ongoing project.
