Cause of Death.....

On a Death certificate I uplifted it states cause of Death
"Consistant with Coal Gas Poisoning".
Anyone know what that means in plain English !

In one word, gassed.

Until North Sea gas came onstream in the 1970s, most gas supplied to houses was coal gas - it was made from processing coal. The deceased could have been poisoned through a gas leak (from gas lighting or a gas cooker, depending on the era), or he could have worked in the gasworks.
