Hi Anniee,

A Warm Welcome to Talking Scot.

I don't think we can really help you much with your Grandfather - he's too young!

We can generally only help with people born over 100 years ago, married 75 or died more 50 years ago.

Do you know if he was the eldest of the family of 12? if not tracing a birth for the eldest ones will ascertain their parents' names and help you go backwards.

However if you can get to Edinburgh you can search the more recent events yourself.

Another option, if he died in England [I'm assuming he's no longer around for you to ask personally] you can order his death certificate -though the details may be less informative.

Hi Anniee and welcome! [talkingscot]

If you search on Scotland's People (link at top of page) there is a John *** born 1918 in Glasgow City
The record is too recent to see online, but you can order an extract from GROS. That would be the way to start, then see who the parents are and perhaps we can help you go backwards with them.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Anniee

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the online source for Scottish researchers. There is a link at the top of this forum that will take you right there or just click on the link I just made. This is a pay per view site but as Wilma has pointed out there are closure restrictions for viewing birth records online that are newer than 100 years. There is an index though that you can consult and order a extract from quite easily. Using the name you have provided there is only one result that looks quite likely to be his birth recorded in 1918 Shettleston district Glasgow. If you were to purchase this record (or visit a record office in Scotland in person) it would supply you with his parents names and the date of their marriage thus permitting you to work your family tree backward quite easily.

Best wishes
Jean

The thought of 11 siblings to trace brings tears to any geneologist's eyes

Though perhaps you could be really fortunate and find several older ones with thier parent's in the 1901 census
