Falkirk's Home Guard - Hard As Nails! Geoff B Bailey

I've just had a peek at this book in the Reference Section of the Library:

HARD AS NAILS!
The Home Guard in Falkirk District Geoff B Bailey

It's got lots of photos and lists of names, some with the group photos, and details of parades and fund raising events, dats and where they were held etc.
I wonder what a 'Smoking Concert' is though! :shock:

Unfortunately there was only a reference copy in Meadowbank, so I'll have to wait for my turn to get it home - I did spy 1 name I recognised though, Sgt Thomas Stannage of the Shieldhill Home Guard - I knew his son.

Each library in Falkirk district has 1 reference and 1 loan copy.

Sounds good, Wilma. I wonder if any of my Finlay's are mentioned in there. Just might eventually get this one...a decent price at £9.99. I was just having a look at the Falkirk Local History society and they seem to have a few books I would love to browse.

I've now got a copy in my sticky mitts [seriously my hands are clean :wink: ].
There's a few Finlay's dotted about:
A. and Cpl J. in A Company (Bonnybridge)
Charles in the Slamannan Platoon of 'C' Company
Charlie in No17 Platoon Laurieston
Cpl Finlay No33 Platoon Camelon
Alec No15 ICI Works

Any of them sound familar Anne?

Hi Wilma,

Thanks for thinking of me and my Finlay boys.

So far I have a Robert, Duncan, James, Joseph, William and Peter, five of whom served in WW1 but as yet haven't found any of their children who might have been around for WW2 so I'm not sure if any of those mentioned would be mine. Is that book referring to WW2 ?

There's more resources held by Falkirk Council Archives that goes into great detail on the happenings on the homefront during WW2 that sounds very interesting that I'd also like to get my hands on. I will make it to Falkirk one of these years. :)
