Hi Liz
..and welcome to Talking Scot. [talkingscot] :D

In the Irish section (in the Scots Abroad part of the forum) we have a link to lots of Irish links:

There is no single source for the sort of info you are seeking. If you have checked all relevant Scots census years and still no place mentioned, next stop would be the births of any children in Scotland after 1855 if you think the couple were married in Ireland as a birth should give a place of marriage (but not between years of 1856-60) Next in my book would be the Mitchell Library in Glasgow to see if your family applied for poor relief as many Irish people did.

Best wishes
Lesley

sorry, think my question was misleading. I actually wanted to try and trace their origins in Ireland. Have tried for nearly 2 years without success. I draw a blank with all the names of our ancestors

Yes, that was what I thought you meant and I was suggestings ways to try to find out where in Ireland they may have come from. Is it several single people, a group of people, a family or a couple you are trying to find out about? If a couple, were they married in Ireland before coming to Scotland? Did they have children in Scotland? Did the people die in Scotland? (when the parents names may be given which again may help with Irish location)

Best wishes

If you are looking on Ancestry, it probably will just say Ireland. However, the official records on Scotland's People (apart from 1841) will often list a county but not a town. You may find, as I have done, that even knowing the county is not much more help than just "Ireland".

Good luck.
Main lines: McCormick(mack); Connel; Others: McDonald; McFadzean; Brown; Kerr and many more
