Hi Dennis,

These two entries on the index almost certainly relate to the same marriage. The lady concerned will have had (used?) the two surnames at some times previously. It could be maiden surname and previous married surname; or if she was born before her parents were married, indexed by mother's maiden surname, and by father's surname.

My best guess is the second one. I suspect she was born illegitimately to Miss Oliver, who subsequently married the father, Mr Barber.

If my theory is correct, then they will be the GROS reference numbers will be the same. If that is the case and you click on one to view it, the other will also be marked as paid.

On that basis, the odds stack up better than 50-50.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew.

I'm learning so much from everyone on how to look at information from more than just 1 perspective.:)

It almost unfolded as you had suggested that it would. I do have a wee question. The James Fleming Temple's MC ( which omits the divorced father )has it written that he is now called James Fleming Laing formerly James Fleming Temple. So, does his wife become Mrs Laing or Temple? Its also interesting that the MC has the wife as Violet Oliver, formerly Violet Oliver Barber. Even her mother goes by the name Barber. I'm going to upload the MC and

The implication is that he is currently known as James LAING so that, if she wishes to be known by his name, then she would be known as Mrs LAING.

Hi Davie.

Would James have had to fill out any forms to legally change his name from Temple back to Laing?

Not unless he felt it to be necessary for whatever reason to do so.

In Scotland it's always been the case that a person can chose to be known by whatever name they chose, as long as there is no criminal or similar intent.

There is no real equivalent in Scotland of the English "deed poll".

Hi Davie.

How does that work in the event of one's medical history?

Dennis - me personally I used the name of the family who brought me up, even got married with their name - for medical reasons I used the name that was on my birth certificate - I also got 2 national insurance numbers when I turned 16 - for both names.

To confuse things even further, when my daughter was born, my hubby registered me as the mother with the name on my birth certificate - can only hope my descendants can work it all one day
Black Isle - Beaton Bethune Campbell
Inverness - Mackintosh
Aberdeen - Mitchell Leslie
Ireland - Cosgrove McGuire
Southshields - Patterson/Pattieson Campbell Sloan
Greenock - Boyle McPhail Blair McKechnie Clark
