657 Edgefauld Road, Provan, Glasgow in 1949

Can anyone tell me what it was?

I have a possible relative who died there.

The register of deaths shows three men aged 70 or more who died there. They were single or widowers. One died on the 22nd, the next on the 26th, and the third on the 1st of the following month. For two of them the (same) informant gave his qualification as 'occupier'.

My guess is that it is an old folks home and the informant was also an 'inmate'.

Hi Hugo,

According to this site for the Western Fire Force area, it's apparently the Barnhill Institute...maybe the poorhouse or hospital in 1949.

The 1927 directory gives this as the address of the Barnhill Poorhouse and this is echoed in the 1943/44 Directory.

That sounds likely. I was reading recently that that's what the authorities did in an effort to assuage the stigma associated with the infirmaries attached to old poor houses - they'd give them some obscure address which usually didn't exist on any map or directory. That way, when somone died there, the family of the deceased didn't have to put where they'd died on the certificate.

That the practice continued well after the poorhouses closed its doors isn't surprising at all either. My own grandfather refused to go to one particular hospital when he was dying because of its history, and that was in the 1970s.

A wee bit of the history here states that it was an old people's hospital after 1945 (my grandfather died there in 1948).

My thanks for the information.

I now have a couple of websites I didn't know existed. And a lesson on social history.

I do appreciate the efforts taken.
