Hi Everyone, can someone please tell me what it means when there is only one parents name on a death certificate.I've been looking at the death record of John Watson of Alloa in 1899,his father Georges name is there but there is no record of his mother Janet Pratice, where her name is there are just two lines through that section. She is on the 1841 census but after that I cant trace her at all.If she was deceased then I would think it would say so on the certificate.any explanations please?
Thank you,Gordon

Re: missing name on death cert
I would think it was because the person, who registered his death, didn't know John's mother's name.Gordyw wrote:Hi Everyone, can someone please tell me what it means when there is only one parents name on a death certificate.I've been looking at the death record of John Watson of Alloa in 1899,his father Georges name is there but there is no record of his mother Janet Pratice, where her name is there are just two lines through that section. She is on the 1841 census but after that I cant trace her at all.If she was deceased then I would think it would say so on the certificate.any explanations please?

I found this post of interest as I have a situation when a 16 year old rellie died.
Her father was the informant, but did not give her mother's name.
I've often wondered about why the registrar allowed this. Surely he could have insisted on disclosure of such an important fact where the child's father was the informant.
