w.m. Reg meaning?

Post by brabason » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:55 pm

Seen on a couple of statutory birth records. In the registration section, after the asssitant registrar signature is written "w.m. Reg"; as if there was something unusual that happened.

Any one with an explanation?

The registrar will have checked and initialed the assistant's registration.

If you look at the very bottom of the page you should find the registrar's signature. I'm sure his name will have the initials W M.

Hi brabason,

[TS_welcome]

There are often countersigntures on certificates originally signed by the assistant registrar. It may well be that the registrar had to check over the assistant's work. Beyond that you will sometimes find the signature of an examiner. He was despatched from New Register House to check the registers before they could be accepted into New Register House.

All the best,

AndrewP
