Bridget Cannavan

Post by Dave Sutton » Fri Jan 15, 2010 9:35 pm

Can anyone help me find the death date of a Bridget Greenan who married Bernard Cannavan in 1862 in Paisley. They had 9 children. I beleive she died some time between 1881 and 1891. She is in the 1881 census but not 1891. As far as I know she was living in Paisley in the 1881 census and Bernard was still there in 1891. I have searched the Sp but no joy! One of the problems is the name Canavan. I have found so many variations its scary. Any help would be so great. Cheers from Canada. Dave

Hi Dave
She is in the 1881 census but not 1891. As far as I know she was living in Paisley in the 1881 census and Bernard was still there in 1891.
And Bernard was listed as a widower in the 1891?

It may not be who you are looking for but on SP there is a death of a bri*t green* other name can*n between 1881-1891 in Renfrewshire, aged 36. This can be established by playing with the search, but I've no credits to check the details further.

Playing with the search more, first name Bridget, surname Greenen, so looking pretty likely. You can establish all this without spending any money! :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Playing further with the search, the death occurred in 1882 in Paisley.

With many names it is well worth learning how to use wildcards in your searches. See:

Hi Dave

Lesley has found your missing record for you. The spelling in the SP index is actually as BBRIDGET CANNAVEN other surname GREENEN
It's no wonder you were pulling your hair out on this one! Perhaps the indexer had a stuttering affliction....

Best wishes

Jean - thanks for checking. :D
With the name combinations it was looking pretty likely, but good to have confirmation.

Hi Dave
You're welcome. :D
If you make use of wildcards where needed, you should find your searches should be a little more successful. It is well worth reading about how they work. You can see above that I started searching with pretty much the bare bones of the name, the letters that I was pretty sure would be in the written name, and I then started adding letters to see if I still had a hit - a bit like playing the word game "hangman"! To find the age, first just choose an age range, e.g. 20-50, and if the result is still showing, reduce the range e.g. 30-50, and again, until you have it down to a ten year span. After that, reduce it one by one until you find the age. You can do a similar thing with the area - choose a county, and if the result is still appearing, select the registration disctricts in groups of 5 (select up to 5 districts at a time by holding down the control key and clicking on them) to see if the result is still there. It can be quite time consuming, but it costs nothing to play around with.

Anyone else that you've had a good rummage for and you can't find, you know where to come - we'll do our best to track 'em down...

Best wishes
Lesley
