still looking for malcolm macleod

Post by utrecht003 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:09 pm

I'm hoping someone could advise me were else to look.
My grandfather Alexander Macleod was born Illigitimate 25 May 1868 at Glasgarraig,Muckairn,Argyll
His mother was Kitty Macleod. present at birth was Mary Macleod,Grandmother.
On Alexanders Marriage Cert.his mother was given as Catherine Mckenzie, previously Macleod,MS Macleod
His father was given as Malcolm Macleod -Joiner
On Alexander's Death 15 December 1935,Tradeston,Glasgow,Age 67
His Mother was given as Catherine Macleod,Subsequently McKenzie MS Macleod.Deceased
His Father was Malcolm Macleod, Joiner. Deceased.

I also have a record a William Mckenzie,Widower, seaman Married to Catherine Macleod (spinster)
Her father was Alexander Macleod
her Mother was Mary Macleod MS Lamond

Also I have A record of the Death of Catherine Mckenzie, widow of William Mckenzie, seaman.
She died 23 January 1917.Her father was Alexander Macleod and Mother was Mary Macleod,MS lamont
Nformant being Alexander Macleod,Son.
I realize this has been a long speel But I have been trying for some time to find if there was any marriage
between Catherine and Malcolm and unfortunately there appears to be no Parish Records for Muckairn.
Is it possible I'm missing something or there are other places I could look.

Hi utrecht003,

OPR records do exist for Muckairn.
  • 529. MUCKAIRN*
    529/1 B 1746-1820 M 1781-1820 D -
    529/2 B 1820-54 M 1820-54 D -
    RNE
    * See Appendix 1 under reference CH2/379
Kirk Session Records:
  • CH2/379 MUCKAIRN
    4 Baptisms 1795-1821
5 Births (loose leaves), various dates 1775-1825
7 Marriages (loose leaves), various dates 1785-1813
I cannot vouch for how extensive or complete these records are within these dates.

All the best,

AndrewP

Scotlandspeople has 2 matches for a M*cLeod / M*Kenzie marriage between 1868 & 1917.
Are either of them your couple?

Another tack to try is the census records,
finding Alexander may help pindown his mother and a window of marriage to Wm.

Although the forms of her surname would indicate 2 marriages :
born McLeod, married a McLeod then a McKenzie.

Since Catherine herself said she was a spinster when she married Alexander McKenzie I think it's unlikely there was a previous marriage.

On my illegitimate g grandfather's marriage entry he gave his mother's name as Jane Cook m.s. Cook and father as William Cook. His father proved to be a William McDougall (from Kirk Session records).

Catherine is proving hard to find on census records - have you found her? I think I have her parents from 1871 onwards - do you know if they were living at Tradeston then?

I see you've been a long time looking for a marriage from other posts. So do you have all the info on this family apart from a previous marriage for Catherine?

Regards,
Annette

This is all pure conjecture on my part but I thought I'd post it anyway in case anybody else can prove or disprove my thoughts. Hopefully I'm not confusing the whole issue.

Here's who I think may be Alexander and his mum in 1881 at Govan -

William McKenzie 40 born Inverness, Ship's Rigger
Catherine McKenzie 35 born Skye
Alexander McKenzie 13 born Oban, Sailmaker
John C McKenzie 4 Months born Glasgow
William Norton 16 Boarder

This may be Alexander McLeod and Mary Lamont in 1871 at Kilmore -

Alexandr Mcleod 56
Mary McLeod 55
Jessie McLeod 10
Alexr Mcintyre 2 Nephew born Muckairn

and in 1891 at Govan -

Alexander McLeod 78
Mary McLeod 70
Christina McLeod 32
John McLeod 13
Katie McLeod 18 Mo
Alexander McKenzie 22 Visitor, Ship's Rigger born Bonawe, Argyll

In 1891 William and Catherine were on there own at Old Monkland - which is making me wonder if I have the wrong family. :?

I wonder if this Alexander is the same person on all 3 census records but the most confusing part is that he's Alexander's nephew/visitor when you would hope that he was his grandson.

What was your Alexander's address when he married?

Annette

Annette,William/Catherine McKenzie seems to tie in AlexanderMcLeod/Mary Lamont Also sounds good. The 1891 census I'm not so sure about But it's something for me to look at
On alexanders marriage cert. His address was 107 Ingram st. Distict of Blythswood, age 23
He Married Maggie Anderson age 19 who was born in 141 Gallowgate,District of High Church,Glasgow.

If the family Nelmit found:
Here's who I think may be Alexander and his mum in 1881 at Govan -

William McKenzie 40 born Inverness, Ship's Rigger
Catherine McKenzie 35 born Skye
Alexander McKenzie 13 born Oban, Sailmaker
John C McKenzie 4 Months born Glasgow
William Norton 16 Boarder
turn out to be the correct ones,
then looking at Baby John's birth should give a place & date of marriage.

Don't give up on Malcolm yet! There are a couple of contenders.

Have you tried contacting Argyll Archives to see if they hold Kirk Sessions for Muckairn. According to their list they have poor law archives and you never know you might be lucky..

I was hoping to find a clue with the 1901 census but no luck.
