Death of Elisabeth Stewart/Glendinning.....
Why can't I find her death?
I have her in 1881 aged 65. She is shown as deceased in 1914 on her son's marriage cert.
I have searched between these dates using Glend*/St* and no first name for all areas. There are 13 hits and none of them match.
What am I missing?

Hi Jean,
There is one with appropriate names, but with the age wildly out. In case of an indexing error, it may be worth your trying if you have not already.
Elizabeth GLENDINNING / STEWART died 1905 aged 62 St Andrew District, Dundee, Angus. GROS data: 282/04 450
It's the only one near that I could see.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hello Jean
As you know I have been looking at Andrew McLean, he has three different calculated ages of birth on three different certificates:
Which calculate he was born:
Census 1851 = 1827
Marriage = 1823 Second marriage
Death = 1834
So as Andrew says perhaps the one in 1905 might be worth a look.

Hi Andrew and Stewie
YesI did see that one but as the age is so far out - 26 yrs and I cannt find her in the 1891 census, also what's she doing in Dundee?? All the family come from the Lothians.
I am tempted to risk another 5 credits. I'll wait a bit today and see if anyone else has any brainwaves.
Thanks
Jean

Re: Stewart/Glendinning
Hello Jean,
what was her entry in the 1881 census? Do you have her parents' names?
Regards,
John

Hello John
Elis(z)abeth's entry in 1881 is 692-2 enumDist 13 Page 1. Address 11 McNeil Hall Edinburgh St Cuthberts.
I only found her there as she is with her son and daughter. Son John aged 34 and daughter Elizabeth aged 29. John died in 1887 and Elizabeth died in 1884, so can't look for them in 1891. She is not with either or her 2 remaining children in 1891.
In 1881 she is shown as Mrs Glendinning. No first name. She is the widow of Jasper Glendinning (how's that for a name!) They are my gg grandparents. He has been easy to trace due to his name.
I have no other details for Elis(z)abeth

Re: death of Elizabeth
Hello Jean,
another case of alien abduction.
The informants seem to be reliable, so in 1887 she is alive (son John's death), and in 1911 she is dead (son George's 2nd marriage). But no sign of a likely death or appearance in a census. By the way, the Dundee death was the wrong way round (married name Stewart).
What happened to son Archibald after 1862?
Going to have a break until this evening.
Regards,
John

Perhaps you've tried this John but when I've been researching my Glendinning surname it is sometimes quoted as Clan or Clen - dinning.

Hi John
Son Archibald married 10 Jan 1868 in Burnmouth Ayton Berwickshire. From 1870 onwards, his children were born in Guisbro Yorkshire. In 1881 he lived in Stokesley With wife, step daughter and his daughter and sons.
Being England I haven't done the 1891 and 1901 censuses for them (I'd forgotten about that) Perhaps Elizabeth went to live with them after son John and daughter Elizabeth died. She certainly did not live with the remaining son, George, who is my g grandfather.
I'd forgotten about Archibald going to England. Thanks for nudging me in this direction. Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees. This seems to be the most reasonable explanation for Elizabeth's "Alien abduction"
She could have died in England.
I've never done any research in England. Can you point me in the right direction?

Re: death of Elizabeth
Hello Jean,
firstly, thanks to Annette for the tip. Most of my searches were using Gl*d*n*ng, but as desperation crept in I changed that to *d*n*ng, but still with no luck.
The 1901 census for England has Archibald (55) and Ann (59) Glendinning at Arkengarthdale in Yorkshire. Archibald had great taste in places to live: Burnmouth, Guisborough, Stokesley, and Arkengarthdale! FreeBMD has a death of Elizabeth Glendinning, aged 71, in the March quarter of 1890 in Richmond, Yorkshire. This is to the east of Arkengarthdale (which is in the Reeth district), but it seems very likely to me.
The bad news is that an English death certificate will tell you little for £7. It should have "widow of ......" and the informant is almost certainly her son, but it will not tell you her maiden name (that appeared in 1953) or her parents (not yet introduced - pathetic).
If you are interested in seeing an example of an English death certificate of that time, just e-mail me.
Regards,
John
