Harry Richards death.....

Post by Tracey » Wed Aug 24, 2005 11:20 pm

My great grandmother had two children to William Hartley Donaldson ( he being my gt grandfather - maybe !) She married Henry Richards in 1906 in Aberdeen. He used to sail the (coal ?) boats between Leith and Aberdeen supposedly. Harry was born in Wanlockhead Dumfries on 21st August 1877. His parents were Henry Joel Richards and Mary Moffat. I havent got the census for them so if any one wants to look  !
But what i am really after is his death. Rumour has it he pushed my gt grandfather overboard and he drowned !! not funny but i dont buy that one !
Harry was definitly off the scene by the early 20,s as my gt grandmother was living with James Scott Skinner - violinist - the so called Strapthsey King till he (James ) died. No one in my family has been able to find Harrys death so far and we havent a clue when he died. One of his daughters is still alive ( in her 90,s !) but is keeping schtum about everything.

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP !! please

Hi Tracey,

1881 census (from LDS CDs)
  • Dwelling: Burnside Cottage
    Census Place: Sanguhar, Dumfries, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0224053 GRO Ref Volume 853-B EnumDist 2 Page 16
    Marr Age Sex Birthplace
    Henry J. RICHARDS M 28 M Edin, Edinburgh, Scotland
    Rel: Head
    Occ: House Carpenter & Joiner
Mary Nelson RICHARDS M 27 F Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland
    Rel: Wife
Agnes RICHARDS 8 F Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland
    Rel: Daur
    Occ: Scholar
Hannah RICHARDS 6 F Wanlockhead, Dumfries, Scotland
    Rel: Daur
    Occ: Scholar
Henry RICHARDS 3 M Wanlockhead, Dumfries, Scotland
    Rel: Son
The place name should be Sanquhar - probably mis-transcribed. Henry is the formal name for Harry. Be prepared to look under both names.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Tracey

I have a connection with the above couple. Mary's grandmother was Mary Neilson and I am a descendant of her sister Agnes. I'd love to share what I have on the rest of the family and hear more about the overboard story!

Hi Bethsam

Unfortunately the overboard story has stayed just that, a story, no one can prove anything yet. Apparently The Mitchell has records of Seaman's deaths (?) so until one of us can get there and check William and Harry ( ) out............................or TNA but im not sure how much these will tell me .

I dont know if you have searched the Richards side but here are a few questions i posted when i found the Rabbi - another rumour came true ! and explains where the Joel came from and has followed down till this day. Or maybe you knew this already.

To explain the below is he is Henry J. RICHARDS age 28 from the 1881 census grandfather.

Hi Tracey

I lost Henry Joel Richard and Mary Moffat after their marriage as the surname became Richards and I didn't think to wildcard it. As Mary would be my 2nd cousin 3 removed, I let it go but found a connection with someone else who made me look again at that side of my tree and yesterday I found Henry, Mary and 3 children in the 1881 census. I have forgotten how to do a private email, so if you could email me, I'll send you a .pdf with what I have on that side of the tree.

I didn't know that the Mitchell held records for deaths at sea, may just have to mosey along soon for a look-see. There is another death at sea I'd like to find.

Take care

Hello Bethsam

Harry and Mary i had no problem finding just didnt persue it too much as they are half blood so to speak although the descendants are definitly very much family - dads aunts uncles cousins ect, anyway i realised what little i have isnt typed up  hence the delay.

In my replies there should be an email tab at the bottom, just click on that and you should get me
