Post by Davie » Fri Aug 26, 2005 5:31 pm

Greetin's all.
I have a cousin coming doon frae the hielands the morra and he wishes to purchase a few cds from this mob
http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/publications.asp
So we are aff tae Pertick the morra before going tae the gemme.
Can anyone advise on what is a good buy and perhaps describe what exactly is on these Cds.
So I can pass on the info before the troops come doon.
If any of you could recommend anything on this site worth purchasing for future research I wid be grateful.
Ah’ll definitely be gettin’ the wee Mount Flo. booklets.
Thanks
Davie

Re CDs at GWSFHS

Hi Davie,

I've used all of the census CDs and found them all really useful - there is the very occasional error, but this happens with most transcriptions.
[the LDS 1881 CDs have a number of errors - and that's the transcription that SP use]

But when you look at some of the original census pages you can well understand why; very faint, poor writing, black marks, streaky lines are just some of the problems that the transcribers have had to contend with.

So all in all, excellent work was done by those involved in getting them copied, checked, and then put on to CDs.

The various censuses don't all have the same search options - some allow "wildcard" anywhere, others only at the end.
[the reason being that they aren't all published by the same person or group]
But they have the CDs (census & burial) on the computers at the premises, so you could have a look at how they work before buying.

The bottom line from me is that they are ALL are worth getting (though it will cost a few bob!).
A good plus is that you can take your time searching, and look at them at any time you wish.

Re CDs at GWSFHS - ps

Hi Davie,
Was in too much of a rush out the door last night - meant to say what the census CDs give in the way of info.
Basically all are name indexes, though the 5 Cds for 1841 Renfrewshire gives the full details - including home address (but not separated into families).
With all of these indexes there is no real way of knowing who was in the one household - a look at the film is needed for this.
All give the Parish, Enumeration District, Page, & line nos.(only the 1841 RFW doesn't give the line as it gives the address).

1841 Renfrewshire (5 CDs)
Name, age, occupation, address, & birthplace (County or not).

1841 Glasgow (Barony)
1841 Glasgow (City, Gorbals, Govan)
Name, age, & census area.

1851 Dunbartonshire
1851 Glasgow City
1851 Renfrewshire
Name, age, & census town

1851 Lanarkshire
Name, age, & birthplace as it is on the original page.

1861 Lanarkshire (includes Glasgow City)
Name, age, & birthplace as it is on the original page.

Enjoy yer day oot, Jack
