Orphans in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Post by BC Mom » Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:05 pm

Does anybody know what would have happened to orphaned children in 1864?
They lived in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland at that time of their parents death.

Thanks,
M

Hi M

I'd think that they may have been sent to the poorhouse or taken in by relatives if they were more fortunate.

Best wishes
Lesley

I have tried to link them with older siblings and back in South Uist possibly, but nothing pops for them.

I'm gathering the little ones went to the poor house or an orphanage.

Thank you,
MaryAnne

Hi MaryAnne

The most likely places in Govan in 1865 would be Quarriers who ran the Orphans Homes for Scotland in Bridge of Weir or The Govan Parochial Poorhouse (it is now the Southern General Hospital so any records will be with the Mitchell Library).

Quarriers is most the likely place and if you Google them for an address they have a digitised archive which they are more than willing to access for you. they took in most orphans from Glasgow as well as other parts of Scotland if they were notified by a minister or priest.

Quarrier's is definitely worth a try but in my experience many abandoned, orphaned or foundling children were fostered out of the parish or stayed at the workhouse till they were old enough to fend for themselves.

The chances are very high that will be a poorhouse application at The Mitchell. I'm not getting there much these days but if you want to give me names and ages I'll have a look when I can.

Regards,
Annette

Annette,

Thank you so much, I'm sorry with all the searching, I forgot this site does not send a post if there is a reply...have to remember to check it.

I only have the one left to find, Duncan has been found...thank you everyone for your help.
Catherine (Chirsty) Buchanan b. Feb. 1851 S. Uist living in Govan

The parents names were Angus Buchanan & Catherine MacLellan both deceased by 1864. I have 6 siblings (including gg-grandfather) and none of them have the children listed with them so any information could send me in the right direction for a search. I have done the ScotlandsPeople for marriages and deaths in Lanarkshire area regarding these names and ages and nothing with the parents names. It can become quite pricey if I were to check every other area, so any clue as to where they moved may lead me to their full information.

I can't thank you enough and I am sorry for the long delay, I have now saved this in my tree file to check it more often.

Have a great week,
MaryAnne

When you post there are some checkboxes underneath the text box. One of them that should always be ticked is "Notify me when a reply is posted." Make sure it is ticked-- I think it is, by default, but perhaps it got unticked on your message?

Sarah

No, it was that they disconnected me..not enough logged on time. I just received an e-mail that I am active again, guess I won't log out and see if that works.

Thanks,
MaryAnne
