Sorry for asking for help (again) but I have given this a good try on my own, but not been able to come up with a result.
I am looking for the death of James Campbell of Aberfeldy Perthshire, which I think was between 1881 & 1891, as I need these
details to narrow down the birth records & so get the names of his parents - there are too many possibles here to narrow down.
This is what I have on him (including all the censuses up to 1881) as follows:
abt 1805 - James born in Aberfeldy Perthshire, inferring from the various census info below.
1828 - Married to Isabella Duff. OPR says: "Parish of Logierait, County of Perthshire. James Campbell, Aberfeldy, Parish of Dull, Isabel Duff Duntaylor, in this parish (Logierait) gave up their names for proclamation of the banns of marriage, 27th Oct 1828"
1841 - Living in Chapel St Aberfeldy, Perthshire with family - James is age 35, Ag Lab, born in Perthshire
1851 - Living at Easter Aberfeldy with wife Isabel & dau Ann 20 - James is age 46, Piper, born Perthshire, Fortingall
1861 - Living in Chapel St Aberfeldy with Isabella & Janet Kennedy, granddaughter - James is age 56, Labourer, born Perth, Dull
1871 - Living at Chapel St Aberfeldy with Isabella & Eliza Stewart, granddaughter - James is age 65, Labourer, born Perth, Dull
1881 - Living in Chapel St Aberfeldy with Jessie Calthrope (Granddaughter - she is Janet Kennedy, Married
George Calthrope, Soldier) & Gr Gnddau Isabella, 7months. James is age 76, General Labourer, born Perthshire, Aberfeldy, Dull. (Under whether Deaf, dumb, blind or lunatic is says Gaelic!)
1891 - Can't find James in Scotland Census. The Calthropes are now living in Suffolk England & James not with them
1910 - Death of his daughter Isabella Campbell wife of James Milne. James (1805) is marked as deceased by the witness
So I infer that he died after 1881 and his Grandaughter Jessie now moves on to England as she is with her husband there in the 1891 census & there is no sign of James in the 1891 Census in Scotland that I can see. I have looked at numerous death records between 1881 & 1891 in both Perthshire & Lanarkshire (where the rest of the family seem to have gone) but none of them fit the bill.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where esle to look or what else to do?
Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,
Did you check the BMD's for England for James? Maybe he moved south with his grand daughter, but died in between census years in England. Ancestry has about a dozen James Campbells listed in the England and Wales BMD's in the right age group for him, but I'm not familiar enough with the geograpy there to say if one of them is yours.

On FreeBMD between 1881 and 1891 there is no obvious James Campbell death in Suffolk. There are a couple in London but most are in the North.

Thanks Anne!
Robert,
Have you checked the cemetery records for Aberfeldy or that area? Do you know where Isabella was buried?
If you go to this website, it gives all kinds of information on genealogy in Perthshire: http://www.genuki.org.uk/ Once you get there, click on Enter this site...then find the counties for Scotland and click on Perthshire.

Re: Looking for Death of James Campbell Perthshire
Thanks all for your suggestions, I am looking into them. Isabella Campbell died in 1876 age 73. The death cert says she died at Chappel St Aberfeldy, so I assume she is buried in Aberfeldy cemetery (there are no details on the certificate). Looking through Genuki for perthshire there seems to be monumental records provided by the Tay Valley Gen society but from the list it doesn't appear to include Aberfeldy and I would have to buy the books - nothing is online. Being in Australia I am quite dependent on online resources! So Aberfeldy cemetery records don't seemt o be easy for me to access. If anyone knows more about this please direct me.
Also Genuki points out the AK Bell library which I was aware of. There are some good records available there online, but only for Perth itself & earlier period.
I have considered the possibility of James going to England & I did look & noted a few records which could be him but there's no way of knowing as English death records don't have enough detail - I hope he didn't go to England for this reason! Of course it would be more likely that a guy who lived in the same place nearly all his life & was quite old by this stage, would be less inclined to head off south, especially as he would have had other family still in Scotland.

Re: Looking for Death of James Campbell Perthshire
Hi again,
If you go back to the Genuki site and look under Perthshire cemeteries, Aberfeldy is listed under the Pitlochry Office and there is an address given.
Also, try this site: http://www.raogk.org for a volunteer in Perthshire who might be willing to look up information for you. I live in the USA and have done this twice. The volunteers have been very helpful and if I remember correctly one of them was also a volunteer at the Tay Valley family history society.
Good hunting!

Re: Looking for Death of James Campbell Perthshire
Aberfeldy cemetery opened in 1890. Before that, people from Aberfeldy would have been buried at Dull, Weem, or St Mary's, Grandtully. There are no inscriptions for James or Isabella Campbell in Aberfeldy cemetery or St Mary's (although that does not necessarily mean they were not buried there, as not all graves have headstones).
All the cemetery records are now held at Perth Crematorium.
This is from Perth & Kinross Council website -
"Bereavement Services hold the burial registers for Perth and Kinross at Perth Crematorium. Burial records can be searched to obtain the location and interments of a particular grave.
There are 143 burial grounds within the Perth and Kinross district which includes the following areas:- Perth, Blairgowrie, Crieff, Kinross and Pitlochry. The registers for these burial grounds are held at Perth Crematorium. The majority date from 1900 but a few earlier records are also available. Most registers are now computerised although there are several of the older cemeteries which can only be researched by using the original registers. Anyone wishing to have an ancestral search carried out should telephone Burial Enquiries on 01738 446865 or e-mail esburials@pkc.gov.uk"

Re: Looking for Death of James Campbell Perthshire
Thanks very much to you both. I was just getting motivated to send a letter to the Pilochry Office about burials for James & Isabella Campbell in Aberfeldy, but now I will send an email to the Perth Crematorium address instead. If I can establish that James is buried in Perthshire then I will redouble my efforts to find the Death Certificate. If he went to England, however, I don't think I'll pursue it as the death cert would not be of much use anyway. I would have to find some other way to decide which OPR birth record is him. Note the 1851 census entry giving his place of birth as Fortingall is an error I think - it was just ditto'ing from the lines above. All the other censuses say he was born in Perth, Aberfeldy, Dull.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Looking for Death of James Campbell Perthshire
Hi everyone,
So I did send an email to the perth crematorium asking about the possible burial of James Campbell & received the following reply (in part):
"In order to conduct a search for the late James Campbell I would need an accurate date of death and any further information you may have which would assist in the search. I would be able to search all of the cemeteries (143) for which we hold records in the area of Perth & Kinross."
So I have to have his date of death in order to be able to find out his date of death (if he's even there). So a bit of a dead end here.
Does anyone have any idea why his death record is not appearing in ScotlandsPeople (assuming he did not up & leave Scotland in his old age), or are there any other sources of info I might consult. I would really like to be able to see newspapers from Perthshire, but I do not seem to be able to loacte any accesses.
Thanks
Robert
