Janet Fraser/Stuart.....

Post by Jean Jeanie » Wed Aug 31, 2005 3:18 pm

Had a trip up north last week and found a number of gravestones in Cromdale Cemetery showing my Frasers and McDonald's. One as far back as a death in 1812 at the age of 62 - best find yet!!

However this one has me stumped as to finding her on SP

The inscription is very clear and reads:-

Erected by James Stuart mason Tomlea in memory of his wife Janet Fraser who died 17 Oct 1856 aged 66 years also their two sons James and William also the above James Stuart died 8 Dec 1884 aged 84 years.

Tried Stuart Janet Fraser 1856 - nothing
Tried Stuart Jane* Fraser 1856-1857 1 hit - wrong.
Tried Janet Fraser 1856-1866(left out the Stuart) 7 hits all wrong.
Tried Jan*et Fra*er St* 1855-1858 - 2 hits both wrong

You would think it would be easy when all the info is there. What am I missing? What other wildcards can I use?

Jean

Hi Jean,

Janets are often known as Jessie. Another wildcard suggestion to add to your list - surname 1 = St*rt, surname 2 = Fra*er, firstname = J*, Year = 1856.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

PS (a few minutes later) - tried that one - no results. Upon deleting the first name, one result (not in Inverness-shire, Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, or Nairnshire). Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid.

Hello Jean,

there appear to be some serious problems with records from this district. I am checking (the site is slow, though) and I will post again once I have completed my tests.

Regards,

John

Hello Jean,

the problems were not as serious as I thought. The district was Cromdale and Inverallan 1855-1862, and then Cromdale and Advie. I noticed that there were about a quarter of deaths in 1884 compared to 1856, so I thought that many were missing, but Inverallan must have been contributing a lot.

Your ancestor is there, but wrongly indexed as Fraser and Grant (entry 62), despite clear handwriting. The entry above (61) should have been indexed as Fraser and Grant, but was indexed as Fraser and Cruickshank (her mother's maiden name).

Please fill out a contact form to SP (from "Contact Us" on any page) and you should be given extra credits and time as compensation. I will be sending in a separate report.

I found 82 year-old James Stewart in Cromdale for the 1881 census but no death in 1884. Do you know where he died?

Regards,

John

Hello John

Having seen the death cert it now proves that this is not my Janet Fraser. Correct name, age and area but wrong parents.

I haven't looked for James Stuart. That would have been my next step if Janet had been correct.

Thanks again

Jean
