Hello,
I am searching for the marriage record for my third great grandparents, Helen Petrie (born: Jul 5, 1795 in Murroes, Angus, Scotland) and David Gibson (born: abt 1791. Arbroath, Angus, Scotland). I checked the Scotlandpeople parish banns and marriage records prior to 1855 without success. I did come across one public member tree in Ancestry.ca that indicated they were married in 1782.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Cordially,

Where did you get the info about the births of Helen and David? Which one of their children was your ancestor?
The only likely family I'm seeing on census records is this one from FREECEN-
Piece: SCT1841/272 Place: Arbroath -Angus Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Arbroath Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Arbroath
Folio: 6 Page: 11
Address: East Side Of High Street
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
GIBSON David M 50 Linen Hand Loom Weaver Angus
GIBSON Helen F 50 Angus
GIBSON Elizabeth F 20 Flax Spinner Angus
GIBSON Mary F 15 Flax Spinner Angus
GIBSON Ann F 15 Flax Spinner Angus
GIBSON David M 12 Flax Spinner Angus
The wife appears to be a Helen Webster. The 1851 shows David senior was born at Arbroath.
Have you seen your David and Helen on a census record?
Regards,
Annette

Re: Looking for marriage for 3rd great grandparents
Hi Annette,
I also found the same information for David and Helen Gibson and their offspring in the 1841 Scotland Census but I don't think these are my paternal 3rd great grandparents. I found the marriage record for may paternal 2nd great-grandparents Elizabeth Gibson and Peter Kerr (GROS 322/00 0002)---both were 23 years of age when they married on 21 Jan 1859 in Tealing, Forfarshire so both would have been born about 1836. There 1st son, William Kerr, is my great-grandfather. If I do the math for the Elizabeth Gibson listed in the 1841 Scotland Census (20 years old) she would have been born in 1821. On the marriage record Elizabeth's Gibson's parents are recorded as David Gibson and Helen Petrie. I'm not sure if David Petrie may have been married more than once--may explain my struggles. So my 'quest' to find the marriage record for David Gibson and Helen Petrie and the birth record for their daughter Elizabeth Gibson continues.
Thanks for you help Annette,
Cheers

Hi Moira,
Were Elizabeth's parents still alive when she married Peter and what was her address then? Who were the witnesses?
Regards,
Annette

Re: Looking for marriage for 3rd great grandparents
Maybe a sideways search might help.
In 1861 Elizabeth and Peter have a David Fenton, nephew living with them. At first glance the relationship is hard to figure out as his parents appear to be John Fenton and Mary Ewan/Ewing but if you look at the other children of that couple you find -
1. DAVID FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 04 DEC 1852 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
2. JAMES BOOTH FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 06 MAY 1861 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
3. ANDREW BOOTH FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 13 APR 1859 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
4. ALEXANDER EWAN FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 14 MAY 1857 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
5. HELEN PETRIE FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 12 MAY 1863 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
6. JOHN FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 07 DEC 1850 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
7. WILLIAM BOOTH FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 01 MAR 1855 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
8. EWAN FENTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 10 MAY 1865 Mains And Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland
So I wonder if Mary Ewan was Elizabeth Gibson's sister. Unfortunately I can't find them on a census together. Maybe somebody else can.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Looking for marriage for 3rd great grandparents
Found her in 1851at Tealing.
Helen Petrie 57 born Dundee
Betsy Gibson 15 born Dundee
Helen is still alive at Tealing in 1861 so you should be able to find death record for her.
Regards,
Annette
Later........Look like John Fenton was her brother.

Re: Looking for marriage for 3rd great grandparents
Hi Annette,
Thanks for your help. I am not so sure that the information in the 1841 Scotland Census applies to my 2nd and 3rd great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Betsy) Gibson and Helen Petrie. Helen Petrie was born about 1795 and based on the age in the 1841 Scotland Census (38 yrs old) she would have been born in 1773. Betsy Gibson was born about 1836 and based on the 1841 Scotland Census she would have been born in 1833. In looking at information under ' next household' on the 1841 Census from FreeCen there was a Fenton family that lived at West Shielhill-- Betsy and Helen lived at East Shielhill.
Piece: SCT1841/322 Place: Tealing -Angus Enumeration District: 4

FINLAY Charlot F 20 Female Servant Angus

Perhaps the John Fenton listed with Helen and Betsy is one of the members of this family and not a relative.
I will continue my search.
Cheers,
Moira

Re: Looking for marriage for 3rd great grandparents
I'm 99.9% sure the family in 1841 is yours. At FREECEN in 1841 Helen's age is transcribed as 38.
John Fenton who married Mary Ewing was born at Tealing around 1822/24 according to census records. Here he is in 1871 with his second wife Betsy Robb at Mains.
John Fenton 47 born Tealing, Carter
Betsy Fenton 38
David Fenton 18 son born Mains
Alexander Fenton 13
Andrew Fenton 11
Jane Fenton 3
Margaret Fenton 2
Betsy Fenton 3 MO
James Alexander 16
Here is Elizabeth and Peter in 1861 at Mains
Peter Kerr 25
Elisabeth Kerr 25
Maryan Kerr 2
William Kerr 5 MO
David Fenton 8 nephew born Mains
John Fenton and Mary Ewing also had a daughter name Helen Petrie Fenton.
I'm sorry I don't have enough credits to look but I'd be very surprised if John Fenton didn't give his mother's name as Helen Petrie when he married Betsy Robb in 1866.
Regards,
Annette

Note that both were previously married.
Unusually, the names of the previous spouses are given.
