William and Jane Strachan Death Records

Post by bidefordbelle » Tue Aug 23, 2011 2:49 pm

William born 1874 Station Road Bannockburn, parents John Strachan and Agnes Scott.
Married Jane Hamilton 1907 Dalry Ayrshire, she was born 1872 Bakip Dalry to a William Hamilton and Jean Muir.
Jane died first before 1929, as my mother married then and her father was listed as a widower.
In 1911 they were living in ??Station Row Dalry, William was in the Arygll and Sutherland Highlanders until 1920's, at Sitirling Castle. He was formly a Ironstone Miner in Dreghorn.
Don't know what other information may be needed, after my mother married a Robert Best Laird in Crosshouse Kilmarnock in 1929, her father made contact maybe mid 1930's, but don't know if he died in Kilmarnock or not as with Jane his wife, she may have died in Dalry just can't find them.
Hope someone can help it is so frustrating!!!!
Thanks Bidefordbelle

The place is Barkip, not Bakip, just on the edge of The Den in Dalry.

See http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=b ... CA8Q8gEwAA .

See also http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/133.html , as Barkip was the site of many miners' rows built close to Dalry to accomodate miners and their families.

Barkip is equidistant between Dalry and Beith on the modern day A737.

Finding the death for William STRACHAN is going to be a lot more difficult, given the name and the fact that we are reliant on the informant's info for what appears in the register entry and the derived index as the age.

Working on the basis of 1874 +/- 2 there's around 40 deaths. Many can be ruled out on the basis of locality. There's one in Stirling that has to be a possibility but can only ever remain that since the informant, the occupier of the address where this William died, had no info on the wife of the deceased, the entry being "Widower of ______", and no info on the parents' names. The age at death is a match with 1874; as is the occupation, shown as retired Colliery underground fireman, often a post given to a miner no longer capable of working at the face.

There plenty 'possibles' to look at in Glasgow and surrounds, - Jeanie died in Rutherglen.

No help whatsoever with William's death but the only birth (of a William) I'm seeing to John and Agnes is this one.

WILLIAM YOUNG STRACHAN

Event(s):
Birth:
14 NOV 1872 Dreghorn, Ayr, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JOHN STRACHAN
Mother: AGNESS SCOTT

Unfortunately the 'Young' doesn't help with the search for a death record.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Montrose Budie and Nelmit,
I have all the relevant family parents and siblings etc; and I am sure the witness of Jeannie's death certificate is John Strachan William's father. I checked out the Stirling record and it could be a possibility given his army connections with Stirling and Bannockburn.
Also when Jeannie died my mother was taken care of by a Mrs Gray in Chappell Street Rutherglen known as Granny Gray by my eldest brother and sister my mother was only 12 when her mother died and her brother was 15. So the J Gray on William's certificate could be a Gray family member.
As for Barkip typing error on my side...I have been to Dalry and what was left of the Den, found the church they married in too. But had no way of knowing at the time where either of them had died.
The only question mark over the record for William means that he died a year after I was born and by that time my parents had made the move to North Devon in 1953, if that was the case my older siblings would have been old enough to remember the event as many of them were married then and some still living in Kilmarnock area, but they don't remember any of it, which would seem very strange..
Appreciate all the help and suggestions you all have given, glad I signed up to the forum.....
