Hello and welcome to Talking Scot djd.djd104 wrote:Hello trying to find info on my great great great grandfather John Charles Donachie not sure when he was born but served in ww1 in Scottish military. From what I'm told he was older when he signed up
I had a quick look at Ancestry and there are a lot of John Don(n)achies to choose from. A rough idea of where and when he was born along with his parents names would definitely help!
If he only had one n in his surname then it narrows it down a bit. One living at Helensburgh and another at Dundee.
His marriage details might help too if you want to post them.
Regards,
Annette

Re: info on a Donachie
I'm not 100 percent these are your people but it is a marriage of interest:
1860 DONAGHY JAMES MOLLAGIN MARGARET DUNDEE FIRST DISTRICT DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/01 0148
Pretty certain that this is Margaret and household in 1901:
Registration Number: 282/3
Registration district: St Clement
Civil parish: Dundee
County: Angus
Address: 41 Rosebank
Margaret Donachie age 58 head
Mary A Donachie age 36 dau
Ann Donachie age 28 dau
Charles Donachie age 21 son
James Donachie age 9 grandson
A DC for Margaret Donachie mn Mulligan is found on SP. She died 13 Dec 1906 at Rosebank St Dundee. Dau Ann is informant. She was a widow of James Donachie who was a hammerman.
I realize you are searching for a John Charles Donachie but couldn't help notice the son named Charles in the household. Might you really be looking for a James? Or since this James is supposedly deceased by 1906 (ie prior to WW1) could they have a son named John Charles and you are off a generation on the Margaret Mulligan? Or what if James has abandoned the family and they are just reporting him as dec'd?? Just grasping at straws as always........
Perhaps you can tell immediately if this family might fit your profile.
Best wishes
Jean

Re: info on a Donachie
Great stuff - so the family Jean found at Dundee is the right one!
You can confirm this by looking at the marriage record of Charles and Mary Jane in Dundee in 1898.
Although Charles and Mary Jane were married she is with her mother in 1901 at 64 Hilltown.
Kathleen Malone 48 born Dundee
Mary Mccall 19
Helen Mccall 7
Thomas Mccall 11
Jessie Mccall 4 MO
Mary Donachie 22 born Dundee
Mary Donachie 1
Dundee is a great place to research - lots of online info including newspapers and photographs.
http://photopolis.dundeecity.gov.uk/wc0329.htm
Here is the family in Essex MA in 1920 from https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXYP-4QP
Charles Donachie M 50y
Mary J Donachie F 42y
Mary Donachie F 20y
Kathleen Donachie F 15y
James A Donachie M 13y born Scotland
Archibald Donachie M 10y born Massachusetts
Charles Donachie M 6y
Looks like Mary Jane's brother Thomas went too from a search at the same site.
So you know the family went to America sometime between the births of James and Archibald.
Lots to work on.
Regards,
Annette
