What's the Latin version of Terence ?
The IGI has this:
JACOBUS MCGOWAN Male
Christening: 08 JUN 1862 Roman Catholic, Drumcliff And Magherow, Sligo, Ireland
Father: PATRITIUS MCGOWAN
Mother: BRIGIDA MCGOWAN
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record
Perhaps he's hiding behind some odd version of his name?

DIONYSIUS MCGOWAN
Christening: 26 DEC 1857 Roman Catholic, Drumcliff And Magherow, Sligo, Ireland
Father: PATRICIUS MCGOWAN Mother: BRIGIDA DEVINS
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record
I found these and several others on a parent search on the IGI using Patrick McGowan and Bridget.

Hi everyone!
Jacobus would be Jacob and Brigida would be Brigid, but she could have used Bridget or other variation.
http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.co ... rence.html
Origin: Latin
Meaning: Uncertain; maybe soft, tender
Additional info:
The name was borne by a Roman writer of comedies, Publius Terentius Afer, commonly known as Terence.
When I went to IGI, I entered in Terentius McGowan, and came up with quite a few records, several of which were in Lanark.
Knowing the Latin origin of a first name will be helpful, now that a lot of the Catholic records have been added.

Hello John,
![TS welcome [TS_welcome]](./images/smilies/TS_welcome.png)
I see that Emma hasn't visited the forum since April 2006
but hope she has kept the same email address and will be alerted to your post. Sounds like you two are related. Have you ever found Terence's birth record?
All the best,
Sarah

Re: mcgowan birth.....
Hi,
from Terrence's poor law application, he is listed only as born in Ireland. He married Ann Hoy in about 1868 in St Patrick's RC chapel.
His mother in law's poor law application lists her as Mary Feenie, widow of Patrick Hoy, born Co Sligo, parish of Cuilbeg. She married about 1850 in Ireland and her daughter Mary was born in West Drumcliff Sligo.
Hope this helps,
John
