GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
trying to find what year Charlie married my Aunt Ellie Burns (from Bangor co.down) ?
Charlie's mother lived at 17 Vigeans rd.Arbroath. but can't find any record of the family on the 1911 census ?
Charlie and Ellie had a daughter b.1931 named Margaret Eleanor. again not sure where she was born? only one birth record shows a birth of a Cargill in Arbroath but named Margaret Campbell Cargill. so that's not her.
the family immigrated to Yonkers in 1932. residing at 76 Hamilton RD.Yonkers N.Y. where Charlie had rented an apartment in 1930
they obviously moved around quite a bit as no record of them on the 1940 census in Yonkers.?
they definitely had another daughter Leonora, but again no record of the schools she attended.? though I did find Margaret Eleanor
attending the University of Louisiana in 1951.
So where did the family finally settle.? it's possible that both the girls are still alive though difficult to trace not knowing their married names.
I will keep exploring every avenue, but any help would be so appreciated.
with thanks skippysarah

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
Did you see his immigration record?
George Charles Cargill was single when he arrived at New York in 1923 and it was then his mother lived at 17 St Vigeans Road. Looks like him in 1930 in New York - still single.
There is a George Cargill of the correct age living at Arbroath in 1911 indexed at SP
The other parts of your post will be edited as the records are too modern.
Regards,
Annette

Sorry I've just re-read your post and see that wasn't the right Charles I had in 1930.

Hello again,
Are you sure the George Charles Cargill who married Ellie Burns is the one who was born at Arbroath?
As far as I can gather, without any confirmation, the George Cargill who immigrated in 1923 is living at Philadelphia in 1930 and married to a lady called Agnes. His parents Alfred and Isabella are also at Philadelphia.
Regards,
Annette

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
hello Annette.
thanks for all 3 replies.
I have uncovered quite a bit about uncle 'Charlie on various sites but still have no idea where he married my aunt Ellie.
his first trip to USA was in 1923 on the passenger ship Belgenland left Southampton in May 1923. Charlie was just 20.
am I right in thinking he had just been released from prison ? the passenger list states that quite a few of the passengers were on
'Parole' ! he arrived in Philadelphia to stay with his uncle John Booth.
Charlie must have spent some time in USA as he was naturalised in 1929. I'm now wondering if he met aunt Ellie on a ship returning to UK(aunt Ellie was returning to N.Ireland having spent 6 years in America) but have no record of the passenger lists or her arrival.
could they have been married at sea ?
it's very good of you to take the time to help solve this mystery, I have been on the case for a long time and refuse to give up,
even though some of the dates are conflicting on some of the sites.
if I could find a marriage cert. then I could move on from there and fill in the gaps.
many thanks again Annette.
regards sarah

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
Hi Sarah and Annette,
The naturalization documents say that George Cargill, Textile Machinist, born in Arbroath Scotland on 7 March 1903 and Agnes Nisbet were married on 1 Jan 1927 in Philadelphia. When he went back to Scotland for a visit in 1936 he was with his wife Agnes… So something doesn't compute here.
Agnes Nisbet was born in Motherwell in 1907 according to the naturalization documents.
Could he have married Ellie Burns after 1936?
All the best,
Sarah

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
hello SarahN.
think what might be putting a spoke in the works is the first name GEORGE. he was known and called by Charles.
anyhow thank you Sarah for your contribution, very much appreciated.
just dawned on me that they may have married in USA around 1927. I found them living at VanCortlandt pk. Yonkers.N.Y> before moving to 78 Hamilton Ave Yonkers in 1930.
What's puzzling is at some point they returned to N.Ireland ? I have passenger lists of Ellie and baby Margaret sailing back to USA in 1932
so maybe they paid a visit to show the new baby to my G/father Edwin Burns in Bangor. ? (Ellies' dad)
next step is to try to find marriage cert. poss. Pennsylvania.? ? (could be a long night)!
do let me know if you find anything remotely helpful and look forward to reply.
many thanks again SARAH

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
He was George Charles on the passenger list you mention in 1923 on the Belgenland. The naturalization papers mention this ship and this crossing also. So if this is not your man, then you have the wrong passenger list. I'm convinced the one who came over in 1923 is the same who was married to Agnes. Same birthplace, same occupation, etc.
Will try to look further when I have time.
Best wishes,
Sarah

Re: GROEORGE CHARLES CARGILL b. ARBROATH
Hi there
I"m not sure about the 1923 passenger list either.
* I note that on the 1932 passenger list returning to the US with her daughter, Ellie is listed as Margaret Eleanor Cargill.
In March 1930 a Charles Cargill aged 23 ,steamfitter arrives at Belfast with spouse Margaret* aged 30 from New York , destination address 6 Lyle Road Bangor.
In January 1931 a Charles Crabb Cargill aged 24 , occ, steam fitter ships, married, sails from Belfast to New York, last perm. residence Yonkers. Place of birth was Arbroath, his father's name was Thomas Cargill, living at 1 Union Street Arbroath.
This father's name and residence matches with those given on the March 1925 passenger list entry (SS Athenia) for a Charles Cargill aged 18 labourer , single, final destination Yonkers..., where he had a brother John, at 43 Garfield ? or Carfield Street ..
So if this i them they all missed the 1930 census?
Sally
