Hello,
I am trying to determine if my great great grandparents, Thomas and Margaret, were married. I know they were step siblings and had a child together. If they were married, I believe it would have been in Dalmellington Ayrshire Scotland.
Thomas Lindsay b. 20/1/1866 Dalmellington Ayrshire Scotland
Margaret Lynn (Linn) b. November 1870 Ireland
Thomas's father and mother:
Crawford Lindsay/ Agnes Stevenson
Margaret's father and mother:
William Lynn /Margaret Higgins
Crawford's wife Agnes died in 1871. He then married Margaret Higgins-Lynn in 1880 which is how Thomas and Margaret came to be step siblings.
Their last residency was Dalmellington Ayrshire Scotland. I should mention too that they were Ironstone Miners.
I know Crawford, his wife Margaret and step daughter Margaret all left for the US and settled in Morrisdale Pennsylvania around 1886 or 87. I don’t know if Thomas went with them or not. Shortly after arriving Margaret gave birth to a son in 1887.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I left out any information that would be helpful.

Re: Can't find marriage record
Hello and welcome to Talking Scot,
I certainly can't find any sign of a marriage at SP.
Thomas is boarding at Dalmellinton in 1901 with a Robert McClymont and family and I think it's him boarding in 1891 at Shotts. A look at at the original record at SP will show if he is single or married.
Later.............................A look at the 1900 US census shows Margaret as a widow. There is a child Crawford born 1887 there who is the grandson of Crawford senior. His father's birthplace is shown as Germany (although later it is shown as Scotland). Is this the child you are talking about?
Regards,
Annette

Re: Can't find marriage record
Hello and thank you for your help!
Is that the 1900 census in Morrisdale Pennsylvania?
Margaret gave birth to a son, Crawford, in November 1887. She married a man from Germany named John Hemmis in 1889. He died January 1900 which is why it shows her as a widow on that census. Before his death they had three sons. John, William and David. I suppose the census taker assumed Crawford's father was also from Germany.
I have Crawford's baptism and death certificate which both list Thomas and Margaret as his parents. I guess they never got married and he stayed in Scotland? I believe Thomas's brothers moved to the US along with his father and step mother. I wonder why he didn't go and also why he didn't marry Margaret.
Do you see a death certificate for Thomas?

Re: Can't find marriage record
I see you have researched Crawford junior's life quite thoroughly.
Searching for a death for Thomas is a little more difficult. A search at SP (and you can't be sure he even died at Scotland) after 1901 for a Thomas Lin*s*y born 1866 +/- 2 years gives 13 results - none are at Ayrshire.
He's not the one at Carluke.

Annette
