HI,
Janet Aitken married a John Reid on the 03 11 1850. How can I get back to her DOB and parents names?. Not much experience on old parish records.
Thank you

Re: Janet Aiken Married 03 11 1850
Hi jjlmary312,
Did she die in Scotland at some time 1855 onwards? If yes, then hopefully her death certificate will give the names of her parents - assuming these names were known to the person who informed the registrar of her death.
Depending where or when she was born - you may need to see census pages including her to get a clue to where she was born - the OPRs may provide some answers for you. Typically a 'birth' OPR is a record of a baptism rather than of the birth. The amount of information given on an OPR baptismal record varies a lot depending on where an when the record was from. There was not a set format to the information, so what was recorded varied a lot.
The online IGI shows the following list of children to a John Reid and Janet Aitken. I presume they are the family of Janet who married in 1850.
[Later] Having taken a peek at the 1855 certificate, I can tell you that it gives the information above, plus it tells you how many children they already had, and how many of these were still living in 1855. So there were pre-1855 children that the parent search didn't find on the online IGI.
A search for James A Reid, age 0, will find the family for you in the 1861 census. That will give you the names of the surviving pre-1855 children to add to the list above. It should also verify the birthplaces and approximate birth years for the parents.
[Later still] Her death certificate is readily found on ScotlandsPeople by searching for Janet Reid, other surname Aitken. There are only four results. By the years and their ages at death, you can reasonably rule out three of them, leaving the one that you are seeking.
All the best,
AndrewP
