2 weddings same couple! why??

Post by AileenA » Wed Aug 29, 2012 1:44 pm

Hello
Hope someone can shed some light on a mystery for me. I am researching my friends' family and spent the day at scotlands people centre on Monday.
Have found two marriages for the same couple within a year of each other.
Parents names are the same so it's definately the same couple.

First marriage - date of marriage - 18th Feb 1873
Isabella Bisset aged 32
address 5 Johnston Street North Leith
spinster
Parents are Alexander Bisset (Builder) and Elizabeth nee Greig

Robert Tranent aged 38
address 15 Coupar Street North Leith
Plumber Journeyman
Widower
Parents are George Tranent (Blacksmith) and Isabella nee Symington

Second marriage - date of marriage 1st Jan 1874
Isabella and Robert have both got their addresses as 18 Moray Place Edinburgh now.
Robert is now a Master plumber.
Roberts age is now listed as being 40 and Isabella's is 34
Parents details are exactly the same

Anyone got any ideas as to why they would have married twice :?
Do you think the fact that their ages are different and don't tally with the previous marriage would make the first marriage invalid????

Anyway look forward to hearing peoples views on this Look forward to hearing from you.
Aileen

hi Aileen

The answer might lie in the first column of the entries where it says something along the lines of "according to the forms of the _____ church" or some other wording that invloves the sheriff subsitute.

I mention this because I have a similar case in my family. The first marriage of my couple was a civil one, but I'm guessing the parents (staunch Free Kirk lot) subsequently must have stirred up such a stink that the couple got married again, this time by a minister!

What does it say in that first column of both your marriage examples?

best wishes
Lesley
