Hi everyone
I am thinking of buying the British Isles Vital Records Index 2nd Edition and I was wondering if anyone else has it and finds it useful. I am researching mainly Lanark and Renfrew right now and I wondered if the CD had more information than the IGI website or if it is much the same.
Thanks
Cathie

Hi Cathy
You pays your money and you takes your chances
I own it and bought it a couple years ago hoping to find some leads in Northern Ireland as well as Scotland and England. I didn't find anyone I can claim as kin in Ireland or Scotland but am pretty sure I got some good info from Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire area in England. On a brigher note I have used it a couple of times to help others soooooo.....for the price I guess it was worth it and it is a handy tool.....but don't get your hopes up too high.....imho.......
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Jean,
Thanks for replying. I think I will go ahead and order it, you never know I might get lucky! If I don't then as you say I might be able to help to help someone else, I certainly have had a lot of help. There is a Family
History place not to far from me but their hours of business do not match my spare time so I do what I can between this forum and SP.
Regards
Cathie

Hi again Cathie
The total BIVRI 2nd edition contains some 10.4 million birth and christening records and 1.9 million marriage records from a combination of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Accordingly these totals account for 7.3 million records never before published and 5 million published in the first Vital Records Index. It sounds like a lot but the breakdown in coverage is scant in some areas. With your interests lying in Lanark and Renfrew the set will give you access to 338,372 births, 10 067 marriages in Lanark and 147,879 births, 1,175 marriages in Renfrew. The time frame covered stretches from 1530 to 1906. As you can well imagine this does not include all the records from this time period!!!
Hope this helps give you an idea of what to expect.....
Best wishes

Hello Jean
I ordered it today so I've paid my money and I'll take my chances!
Who knows I might even find something in the section on Ireland when I get finished with Lanark and Renfrew (many many moons from now). At the very least I will be able to join in as a looker-upper instead of always help me help me
Regards
