Elijah Whitehall and Ruth Priest
I have obtianed a copy of the marriage cert for the marriage in 1836. Been busy looking for a copy of the death cert for Ruth Whitehall and gopt a copy in the post today. It says Ruth Whittall (same spelling as on the marriage cert) but it says the daughter registered the death and it looks like she was called Tabia or Sabia. Is this an abbreviated name? 11 Dudley Road. I am trying to clarify that she is the wife of Elijah Whitehall spelt Whittall. Looking back on the cenus ther are 2 people with approx 5 years difference in age. Was wondering if I have the incorrect death cert.

hi jjlmary312
Any sign in the census records you have looked at of a daughter who fits the bill? Ideally it would be great if there was a census which is at the same address as that given at the time of death. Does it not state who Ruth was the "wife of " on the cert? I seem to remember English certs often have this for women, but do not generally state the spouse for men.
Difficult to say without seeing the handwriting, but could the daughter's name be Sofia? What names do you have for a daughter to your Ruth? Is the daughter's surname on the death cert. still Whitehall/Whittall ?
If it is only the age at death which is not quite right, I would not worry too much about that - remember it is the death informant who states the age, and they may not have accurate knowledge. Spelling of a surname can vary a fair bit, so that in itself is also not a major worry.
Best wishes

If you are referring to the 1881 census, I believe Ruth was listed twice, once with her son Abraham & family and once with her remaining unmarried children. In that census and earlier ones she has a daughter whose name varies between Sabiah, Sabia, Libia, even Tabitha in one
I can't see that there were two Ruths of that age and place in any of the other censuses.
Best wishes,
