Well, I had a surprise with the release of the 1912 birth records - my granny had a sister who was born that year but passed away in 1914. I had never heard of the sister, but then I left Scotland very young, and so didn't have my granny near to tell me all the family tales. But my Dad (her son) said he's never hear of the sister either. I wonder if my granny even knew....granny was the only girl in a houseful of boys, so you'd think she might have said "I had a sister once".

Anyway, I'm glad I found her, so she won't be forgotten.

Hi Nina
It was not unusual for children not to know about other children who came into the family and left quickly, until they were much older.
I my own case there was an older brother who only lived a day. I was well into my teens when I found out about him, his name was given to my younger brother, and even then it was only relatively recently, that I found out his name (when I started my family search).

Hi StewL,

Yes I have come across a lot of surprises like this, but not so much in the closer generations. For example, yy Dad only knew of one sister for his own grandmother, but she was one of 7 children, and nearly all of them survived - they just lost contact, and weren't spoken of.

That's what makes this so much fun - the surprises!
