Paisley Abbey - stained glass window

Post by arthurk » Thu Feb 07, 2013 6:47 pm

I've found an old press cutting and a later reference in family papers to a stained glass window in Paisley Abbey which was installed as a memorial to Andrew Millar, Greenlaw, who was a writer in Paisley, heritors' clerk and elder of the Abbey, and Colonel of the 2nd Battalion Renfrewshire Volunteers; he died in 1888. It was designed by Ballantyne & Sons of Edinburgh, and it is in the north aisle (west); it is said to be a single light but with three scenes depicting Nathanael (from the New Testament), and it incorprates a memorial inscription.

Despite much googling I've been unable to find either a picture or any further information about this window. Can anyone tell me if it's still there, please, and if so, where I might find a picture of it? Andrew Millar was a distant family member - great uncle to my uncle by marriage.

Many thanks,

Arthur

Hi Arthur,

All I have turned up online so far is a page from a book showing that the Wallace Memorial Window which was installed in Paisley Abbey in 1873 was made by James Ballantyne and Son of Edssinburgh.

Google Books view of "On the Trail of William Wallace" by David R Ross

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you - I have now
(But until I can get hold of a copy to see if it has a picture of the relevant window, can anyone tell me any more, please?)

I'd found that one, but thanks anyway. Including Ballantyne in the search box brought up lots on Wallace, but nothing on the Andrew Millar window. Obviously he wasn't as famous

Hi Arthur,

Apologies if you have done so already, but have you contacted the Abbey itself?

I have now, thanks. Meg's link went to a newspaper article about the Book on the Abbey windows, which said it was available from the Abbey shop. I've sent them an email and had a prompt and helpful reply.
