Tide waiter - Customs - Perth, Scotland

Post by ship rigger » Sun Mar 24, 2013 12:05 pm

Hello

John Cameron who died in 1816 (approximately) in Perth was a tide waiter. I understand Customs staff records might be available to look at. Does anyone know where they are kept for Scotland and how to go about it?

thanks

Drew

Hi Drew
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D

I woudl expect if records have survived that they are likely to be with either the National ARchives of SCotland or at Perth Archives.

The NAS site suggests that they are held at Perth:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/customs.asp

To see the year ranges fro the records go to :
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
and put the ref no in the Ref box e.g.
CE52/1/

In order to find any more detail as to the actual content and to get a feel for what is and what is not recorded in them, you would probably have to visit the archives and work your way through those records which appear to cover the relevant dates. (Unless there has been a book written on the subject)

http://www.pkc.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=14002&p=0
at CE52 does not give any indication that lists of employees are mentioned, but that does not mean that names will not appear in the documentation.

Best wishes
Lesley
