Cumming,John and or George Imlach Cumming, Banffshire

Post by spacecookie » Sat Jun 29, 2013 8:29 am

Hi,I have been unable to find any record of GG Grandfather George imlach Cumming. the only info i have is from his military Record stating Born Banff Scotland 1825.He died here in NZ 1873 .We only have the fathers name John Cumming, Death Cert. I have had many very helpful people on lots of sites looking up for me and cannot find him anywhere in Scotland. It had been suggested that he may have moved to England so he was able to join the army. He joined the 57th Reg of foot in 1843.On Ancestry it has his parents as John Cumming and Jean Jameison but i have no proof. Cant find anything in England either. Its like he didnt exist before he joined the army. If anyone has come across them in their research, would be very glad of some information. i have been searching for ages and have been waiting to complete my tree. His middle name Imlach had us also thinking his father may have married an Imlach as the name has been handed down generations.I am financially limited to how many sites i can join, it makes it harder.thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Hi,
Do you think he is the George Cumming in Banff in the 1841 census? Doesn't help with his parents, though…

1841
Sandyhill Road, Banff, Banffshire
Helen Rhind, 70, born Banffshire
Isabella Rhind, 30, born Banffshire
George Cumming, 15, born Banffshire, Occupation: Cl

All the best,
Sarah

HI there,it could be him, the dates fit. With the census that means he was from the county of Banffshire does it not the Parish of Banff? We are thinking he may of gone to England sometime before 1843 so he could join the 57th Reg of Foot. thanks very much for the help.

Unfortunately, the 1841 census only tells whether a person was or was not born in the same county that he or she was living in at the time, so we don't know exactly where in Banffshire he might have been born.

On the other hand, I'm very much afraid that the one I found in 1841 may be this one in 1851, since his occupation was "Cl"… :(

1851
4 South Castle Street, Banff, Banffshire
George Cumming, 27, Head, born Marnoch, Banffshire, Writer General Clerk Law
Elizabeth Cumming, 30, Wife, born Banff, Banffshire
Isabella Cumming, 6, Daughter, born Banff, Banffshire, Scholar
Georgina Cumming, 4, Daughter, born Banff, Banffshire, Scholar
William John Cumming, 2, Son, born Banff, Banffshire
Alexander Robert Cumming, 8mo, born Banff, Banffshire
Ann Smith, 25, Servant, born Banff, Banffshire, House Servant

Have you explored the idea that George might have been illegitimate and was perhaps christened as George Imlach (assuming that was his mother's maiden name)?
If the Kirk Session records exist for his parish (and if we knew which one it was!) then there might be mention of his birth.

All the best,
Sarah

Probably coincidence but have you investigated this family who are living at Reading in 1861.

John Sarras Cumming 59 Fundholder, born Banff, Scotland
Julia Cumming 53 wife, born Reading, Berkshire
Anne Noon Cumming 22 daughter, born Middlesex, Hammersmith

Annette

Hi, yes i had thought he may have been iligitimate. Or his father John Cumming had married his mother with the surname Imlach, still couldnt find anything. The name Imlach has been carried down from him.I noticed that he carried his wifes surname to his first son as his second name which made me think Imlach may have been his mothers name,I forgot to mention that he married in Malta while in the army so would have been single before 1843.thanks guys for helping. Its frustrating coming to a dead end.

Hi, i was given some information from another site, that had these as George Cummings parents, but i am not sure. John Cumming born 10/8.1798 Marnoch Banff christened 12/8/1798, wife Jean Jameison born abt 1802, Marnoch Banff, married 13/11/1819 Church Banff V, Banffshire. No verification that theses are his parents though.

There is military record on Ancestry of a George Cumming born 1825 at Banff who joined the 57th foot in 1843. This George married Emma Smith in 1860 at Bombay.

Name: George Cumming

Spouse's Name: Emma Ann Smith

Event Date: 05 Nov 1860
Event Place: Poona, Bombay, India

Father's Name: John Cumming

Spouse's Father's Name: Soloman Smith

Doesn't really help much except it tells you this George's father's name was John.

Is this your George as he appears to have also ended up in New Zealand but I see the marriage details are different? :?

Annette

In the Wairoa Cemetery (New Zealand) there is a burial for George Imlach Cumming. He died 9 July 1873. He was an armed constabulary inspector
