Can anyone tell me, a marriage in Scotland 1875, if the marriage had ended in divorce in 1880, would there have been a margin entry (RCE) on the original?

No. I don’t think there would. Firstly, there’s no way that the registrar would know if a divorce had been granted. (I am sure the courts don’t write to them about it). Secondly, the RCE is generally about correcting errors. A divorce is really a subsequent event. So no error to correct.

Divorce in Scotland in 1880 would have been fairly unusual. But not impossible.

They certainly stamp modern records with the RCE stamp showing the ref and year of divorce but I don't know when it started.

Have you tried searching NAS? Sometimes you find divorces in the newspapers too.

Hello Kathy,

I don't know when the records were first amended, but I have a marriage record from 1913 in Glasgow which was later given a RCE stamp for a divorce that took place in 1919.

Thanks for the replies.
I was not sure where to look for the information on divorce, I will try NAS, and also email Greenock Library for a newspaper lookup. The husband remarried in 1881 in Canada stated he was single, the wife remarried 1883 , stated she was a widow.

Decrees of Court fixing Status of Parties to be noted in Register.
V. In every Case in which the Status of any Person shall be altered by a Decree of any competent Court, the Clerk to the Process shall forthwith report such Decree to the Registrar General; and it shall be lawful for the Registrar General, and he is hereby required, to take all Measures necessary for having the Entries in time [the] Duplicate Registers affected by such Decree rectified, by causing the Date of the Decree and the Import thereof to be noted upon the Margin of both Duplicates Opposite to such Entries, as the Registrar General shall think fit and direct.

There is nothing noted on the original entry, I have to assume both parties told fibs at the time of their second marriage.
